Posted: 29 Feb 2016 07:11 AM PST

A U.S. Air Force veteran charged with trying to join the Islamic State is set to go on trial in New York on Monday, one of the first of more than 75 Islamic State-related cases brought against Americans to reach trial. Tairod Nathan Webster Pugh, 48, was detained by Turkish authorities in Istanbul in January 2015 after he returned from a year-long stint living in Egypt. U.S. investigators say they found a letter to Pugh's Egyptian wife on his computer declaring his intention to "defend the Islamic States" and saying he had only two options: "Victory or Martyr." They also discovered approximately 180 jihadist videos on his laptop, including one that showed Islamic State militants executing several prisoners, according to prosecutors.

U.S. court test on abortion reflects success of strategy shift

Posted: 28 Feb 2016 10:50 AM PST

File photo of an anti-abortion protester holding sign outside U.S. Supreme Court t in WashingtonWhen the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday hears a major abortion case for the first time in nearly a decade, the regulations at issue will not involve fetuses or the mother, but rather standards for doctors and facilities where the procedure is performed. "It took a while to see the impact" of state laws imposing regulations on abortion providers, said Elizabeth Nash, a policy analyst at the Guttmacher Institute, which tracks abortion policy and supports abortion rights. One of the two Texas regulations before the court requires doctors who provide abortions to have "admitting privileges" at a local hospital so they can treat patients needing surgery or other critical care.

Iran's pragmatic Rouhani cheers election wins, says government stronger

Posted: 27 Feb 2016 11:44 PM PST

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani waves after casting his vote during elections for the parliament and Assembly of Experts, in TehranBy Samia Nakhoul TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iranian President Hassan Rouhani won an emphatic vote of confidence and reformist partners secured surprise gains in parliament in early results from elections that could accelerate the Islamic Republic's emergence from years of isolation. While gains by moderates and reformists in Friday's polls were most evident in the capital, Tehran, the sheer scale of the advances there suggests a legislature more friendly to the pragmatist Rouhani has emerged as a distinct possibility. A loosening of control by the anti-Western hardliners who currently dominate the 290-seat parliament could strengthen his hand to open Iran further to foreign trade and investment following last year's breakthrough nuclear deal.

Oscars stand on the red carpet during preparations for the 88th Academy Awards in HollywoodBy Gina Cherelus NEW YORK (Reuters) - The creator of the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag on Twitter on Saturday said she will watch and tweet about a 1999 coming-of-age movie featuring three black actors rather than Sunday night's showing of the Academy Awards, joining a growing list of activists and entertainers snubbing the event for its lack of diversity. April Reign, managing editor of BroadwayBlack.com, said she will watch "The Wood," starring Omar Epps, Richard T. Jones and Taye Diggs on Netflix on Sunday night as the Oscars show airs on ABC. "What I'm doing is attempting to amplify the discussion," Reign said at Saturday's conference, hosted by the National Association of Black Journalists.

Michigan governor's aides urged switch away from Flint River

Posted: 27 Feb 2016 02:26 AM PST

Water faucet filters are distributed to Flint residents at a distribution center in a fire station in FlintBy Ben Klayman DETROIT (Reuters) - Quality problems prompted two of Michigan Governor Rick Snyder's top lawyers to urge that Flint be moved back to the Detroit water system just months after a decision to draw water supply from the Flint River, according to emails released on Friday. Flint switched its water supply from Detroit to the Flint River in April 2014 in a bid to cut costs when the city was under a state-appointed emergency manager. While the city switched its water source back to Detroit in October 2015, corrosive water from the river had already leached lead from city pipes, posing a serious threat to public health.

On the stroke of midnight, guns fell silent in the Damascus suburbs and the devastated northern city of Aleppo, AFP correspondents said, after a day of intense Russian air strikes on rebel bastions across the country.
