Jim Jordan tries and fails to get Fauci to say protesters should be arrested for gathering during pandemic

Posted: 31 Jul 2020 12:01 PM PDT

Jim Jordan tries and fails to get Fauci to say protesters should be arrested for gathering during pandemicDr. Anthony Fauci wants to make it clear he's got nothing to do with the justice system.Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, appeared before Congress on Friday for a hearing on the federal government's coronavirus response. That's where Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), who's been skeptical of restrictions meant to stem the virus' spread, tried to get Fauci to distinguish between protests against racism in the U.S. and bans on businesses reopening amid the pandemic.Because science indicates crowds exacerbate the spread of coronavirus, Jordan asked Fauci on Friday if the government "should limit the protests." "I'm not in a position to determine what the government should do in a forceful way," Fauci responded. So Jordan kept pressing: "The government is stopping people from going to church," claiming that's something "the five liberals" on the Supreme Court had decided. But Fauci continued holding out, saying he does not "judge one crowd versus another crowd" and would not "opine on who should get arrested or not. That's not my position."Jordan then went so far as to claim Fauci had said "protests increase the spread" of coronavirus. "I said crowds, I didn't say specifically, I didn't say protests or anything, " Fauci firmly responded. "You're putting words in my mouth," Fauci continued before saying he had no data showing the nationwide protests had spread the virus. Watch the whole exchange below. > Rep. Jordan: So, you're allowed to protest, millions of people in crowds...but you try to run your business and you get arrested?> > Dr. Fauci: I don't understand what you're asking me, as a public health official, to opine on who should get arrested or not. That's not my position pic.twitter.com/fAZEqbLz5q> > -- CBS News (@CBSNews) July 31, 2020More stories from theweek.com New Lincoln Project video imagines what it's like to wake up from a coma in 2020 Could America split up? Jake Tapper Grills Coronavirus Testing Czar: Are You ‘Afraid’ of Upsetting Trump?

Posted: 26 Jul 2020 11:38 AM PDT

Jake Tapper Grills Coronavirus Testing Czar: Are You 'Afraid' of Upsetting Trump?CNN anchor Jake Tapper took Assistant Secretary of Health Adm. Brett Giroir to task over the continuing issues with coronavirus testing, asking the coronavirus testing czar if he is "afraid" of bringing these problems up with President Donald Trump.During a contentious 20-minute interview on CNN's State of the Union on Sunday morning, Tapper repeatedly pressed Giroir on the weeklong delays in coronavirus testing results Americans are experiencing."Are you happy where testing is right now?" Tapper asked, prompting Giroir to say he's "never going to be happy" until they have the pandemic under control. While acknowledging that testing is still not where it should be, the HHS official went on to tout the progress the administration has made over the past few months, adding that half of the tests conducted have turnaround times of less than 24 hours."The delays that most people talk about are at the large commercial labs that perform about half the testing in the country," he said. "Now, the data are, the average turnaround is 4.27 days."The CNN anchor brought up former acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney's criticism of the administration's handling of the pandemic, specifically the poor turnaround times on testing. In an op-ed earlier this month, Mulvaney said the long waits for results were "inexcusable" while citing his own family's experience. At the same time, Tapper repeatedly grilled Giroir on the president's promises when it came to testing and getting the virus, which has now killed nearly 150,000 Americans, under control."In March, President Trump said, falsely, anyone who wants a test can get a test," the veteran anchor pressed. "At what point will it be true, sir, that anyone who wants a test will be able to get one with a quick turnaround so as to be effective. When will that be true?"Giroir, meanwhile, claimed that it's "true now" that anyone who "needs a test can get a test," adding that he's "highly confident" that turnaround times will decrease this week based on advances they've made.Tapper also pushed the public health official on the administration's use of the Defense Production Act to ramp up production on masks and ventilators, wondering aloud why the White House wasn't using it more forcefully on testing. This led to the CNN host asking whether this was due to an unwillingness to upset the president."There seems to be this reluctance to push the president to do what he needs to do to get the testing up to speed," Tapper declared. "I know that he's under the misguided impression that more testing is bad and makes him look bad, which as you know is completely false.""And I'm wondering if you and others are just afraid to do this because you don't want to upset him, afraid to ask him to do what he needs to do to invoke the DPA to force the federal labs to get up to speed to where we need to be so that we can isolate the virus, as you know," he added. "Are you afraid to bring this up to President Trump because it will upset him?"Giroir, for his part, denied that this was the case, claiming that tough issues and problems are brought up openly with Trump and the administration."Everyone of the administration understands the importance of testing," he claimed. "Nobody in the task force is afraid to bring up anything to the vice president or the president.""Every time I've met with the president, he's been listening to all the data, he assesses that, he understands it," Giroir continued. "I meet with the vice president almost every single day. No one is trying to stop testing in this country. No one has ever told me to do that. We want more, we want better, we want quicker."Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. David Koch’s Lying Wife Hid Real-Estate Purchase, Locked Him Up During Party, Bodyguard Claims

Posted: 23 Jul 2020 11:29 AM PDT

David Koch's Lying Wife Hid Real-Estate Purchase, Locked Him Up During Party, Bodyguard ClaimsBillionaire David Koch's wife repeatedly schemed against the Republican megadonor in the months before he died, forcing his nurses to lock him in a room during a dinner party and using code words to hide real estate and travel plans, the couple's former bodyguard claims.  The stunning allegations against Julia Koch, 58, were leveled in an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission complaint filed last week by Felicia Racine, a 29-year-old former Koch bodyguard. In the complaint, which was obtained by the New York Daily News, Racine alleged the billionaire's wife subjected her to gender-based discrimination and forced her to go along with several duplicitous schemes during her employment for the Koch family between January 2018 and April 2020. Koch Brother Joins Fight to Stop America's Involvement in the Yemen War"The deception and lies for sure made me fearful of losing my job if I did speak up," Racine said in an interview with the New York Daily News Thursday. "I was always under the impression that they had so much money, if you don't just bite your tongue and go along with things, they'll get rid of you."Racine, a U.S. Air Force veteran, recalled several times the billionaire's wife allegedly duped her husband before he died last August—including one 2019 dinner party where Julia Koch locked her husband in his bedroom. The complaint alleges that when Koch, 79, left his bedroom during the party—and said "I love her" while putting his arm around his wife—Julia Koch instructed another staffer and some nurses to take the billionaire away.  "Escort him back to this room now, you have to lock the door, lock him there so he doesn't interrupt the dinner party again," she said, according to Racine.Julia Koch also allegedly instructed staffers to keep quiet about the $40 million Manhattan townhouse she bought in October 2018—while her husband lived in another residence in the same city. The complaint states the billionaire's wife forced employees to refer to her townhouse as "Hamilton" and told them not to talk about the property in front of the billionaire—and even hide news reports about the purchase. As part of her scheming, Julia Koch also commissioned a replica of an Amedeo Modigliani painting owned by the family so she could move the original to her secret townhouse without her husband noticing, the papers allege. In another alleged example of her manipulative behavior, Racine states staffers were instructed to stay hush-hush about a June 2018 family trip to South Africa because Julia Koch didn't want her husband to attend. She allegedly told Racine to refer to the trip as "Project X." Billionaire David Koch, Who Reshaped American Politics and Paved the Way for Trump, Has DiedThe former bodyguard added that staff also kept the 58-year-old's "boyfriend," Charles Manger, under wraps from the billionaire industrialist. "Manger typically visited with Julia at several Koch residences, while David Sr. was still alive, including the Southampton residence," the complaint states, noting that the former bodyguard "provided some security for both Julia and Manger together as a couple."Racine claims she was also tricked into delivering Koch's underage son a fake ID and was asked at least once to "mother" the billionaire's daughter—including making her bed and making sure the Harvard undergrad left parties on time. These requests, according to the complaint, were never asked of male employees. Some of Julia Koch's instructions appeared more sinister to staffers, according to the Daily News. The complaint alleges that Racine heard from some nurses that the billionaire's wife didn't want them to use a feeding tube on her husband in the months before his death. Bill Maher Dances on David Koch's Grave: 'I'm Glad He's Dead and I Hope the End Was Painful'"Felicia believed that Julia had refused David Sr.'s feeding tube because Julia could not deal with David Sr. anymore and did not want his life prolonged further," the complaint states, noting that the nurses were "uncomfortable" with Julia Koch's request and stressed that "he's gonna die." The complaint adds that Racine was fired on April 1 under the pretense that her Air Force husband's recent transfer to California would hinder her ability to effectively protect the Koch family. "As a result of the discriminatory/retaliatory termination, Felicia suffered and continues to suffer damages," the complaint states.Lawyers for Koch Industries did not immediately respond to The Daily Beast's request for comment. Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip?
