Vatican spokesman, deputy, resign over strategy differencesA brief Vatican statement gave no reason for the resignations. Spokesman Greg Burke, an American, tweeted that he and his Spanish deputy, Paloma Garcia Ovejero, had quit to let Pope Francis appoint a new team in what was a "time of transition". A Vatican source said both Burke and Ovejero had wanted more autonomy from the Vatican department that oversees all communications, known as the Dicastery for Communications.

Lion kills worker after escaping from enclosure at wildlife centre in US

Lion kills worker after escaping from enclosure at wildlife centre in US A lion killed a young worker at a wildlife conservatory in North Carolina on Sunday after it got loose from a locked space. Alexandra Black, 22, of New Palestine, Indiana, was killed after being attacked by the animal in an enclosure that was being cleaned at the Conservators Centre, news outlets reported, citing a statement from the Caswell County Sheriff's Office. The lion was shot and killed after attempts to tranquilise the animal failed, deputies said. A "husbandry team" led by a professionally trained animal keeper was carrying out the routine cleaning when the lion somehow got loose, the centre said in a statement. It wasn't clear how the lion escaped the area that was supposed to be locked, said the centre, which is closed until further notice. "This is the worst day of my life. We've lost a person. We've lost an animal. We have lost the faith in ourselves a little today," said Mindy Stinner, the executive director of the Conservators Center, according to WTVD-TV. Black had graduated from Indiana University in May with a degree in animal behaviour, according to her LinkedIn page. She had been working at the conservatory for about two weeks, her family said. "She was a beautiful young woman who had just started her career, there was a terrible accident, and we are mourning," Black's family said in a statement, according to news outlets. "But, she died following her passion." The centre said the lion was fatally shot to allow county personnel to retrieve Black. The facility was founded in 1999 and is in Burlington, about 50 miles northwest of Raleigh. On its website, the centre said it began giving public tours in 2007 and gets more than 16,000 visitors annually. It has more than a dozen employees and currently houses more than 80 animals and more than 21 species. The centre says it took in 14 lions and tigers in 2004 to assist the US Department of Agriculture with caring for animals that were living in "unacceptable conditions."

Bentley takes a page out of Porsche’s playbook as it plans to lure over Tesla buyers

Posted: 29 Dec 2018 06:00 AM PST

Bentley takes a page out of Porsche's playbook as it plans to lure over Tesla buyersWhether you love Tesla or can't stand the company -- perhaps due to the antics of CEO Elon Musk -- there's no getting around the fact that the company may very well go down as one of the more influential car manufacturers in history. In a relatively short time-frame, Tesla managed to bring electric cars into the mainstream. Tesla's success has since prompted a number of luxury auto brands -- from BMW to Porsche -- to finally start taking EVs seriously. Just last year, for example, Porsche Cars North America CEO Klaus Zellmer flat-out said that the allure of the Model S likely lured away consumers who were otherwise interested in picking up a Porsche. In light of that, another luxury automaker influenced by Tesla's ongoing success is Bentley. During a recent interview with Automotive News Europe, Bentley CEO Adrian Hallmark relayed that he'd like to broaden Bentley's reach to include hyper-wealthy "upper liberals" who tend to be drawn to EVs from the likes of Tesla. As a result, Hallmark said that Bentley is planning to dive head-first into the EV realm. > About 40 percent of our customers would consider buying an EV. But more important, the two major demographic segments that we don't currently sell to -- the upper liberals and the post-moderns -- account for 40 percent of high-net-worth individuals, and an EV is even more appealing to them than to our customers. They tend to buy Porsche and Tesla now. We see full-electric cars as another growth opportunity in a five- to 10-year period. In the meantime, all nameplates will have a hybrid option before 2025. And similar to what we heard from Porsche when it was designing what is now known as the Taycan, Hallmark relayed that Bentley's first electric car will be designed as a Bentley that just happens to be electric. In other words, the company has no plans to make any compromises on design and performance when it rolls out an EV. Bentley has introduced some concept EV designs in the past, but it remains to be seen when a fully electric Bentley will become available for purchase.

Syrian army deploys to Manbij after Kurdish calls to deter TurkeyThe Syrian army said it had deployed forces to Manbij in northwest Syria on Friday, after the Kurdish YPG militia urged Damascus to protect the town from the threat of Turkish attacks. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based monitoring group, said the government forces were stationed out the outskirts, between the town and territory under Turkish influence. U.S. President Donald Trump's abrupt decision to withdraw troops from Syria has alarmed the Kurdish-led fighters who have fought Islamic State alongside them for years.

Senators have been told they'll vote only once there's a deal backed by Democrats and by Trump, who is demanding $5 billion for a wall at the southern border, his central campaign promise. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders issued a statement outlining Trump's demands that didn't include the word "wall." She said later there was no significance to that omission.

Tributes to British couple who died within hours of each other in Australia

Posted: 27 Dec 2018 02:01 AM PST

Tributes to British couple who died within hours of each other in AustraliaThousands of dollars have been raised to help the families of a British couple who died within hours of each other in Australia just days before Christmas. Jason Francis was hit by a car, reportedly driven by a pizza delivery worker, near the home he shared with his partner Alice Robinson in Perth. Following his death, Ms Robinson, who was said to have been left "heartbroken", was found dead. More than A$30,000 (£16,000) has been raised for the bereaved families of the couple, believed to be from Shropshire, since a fundraising page was set up on Christmas Eve. Mr Francis had been on a day out with some other friends from the rugby club who organised a taxi home for him on Saturday evening. The 29-year-old was on the carriageway in the beachside suburb of Scarborough when he was hit by a white VW Jetta, driven by an 18-year-old man, Western Australia Police said. Following on from our tragic news of Jason and Alice, a go fund me page has been set up to raise funds to bring our friends home so that the families can lay them to rest #gofundme#donatehttps://t.co/0pTHtPvrZ4— Newport Salop RUFC (@NewportSalopRFC) December 24, 2018 Sam Diamond, president of Cottelsoe rugby club, which Mr Francis had joined at the beginning of the year after moving to the area, said he understood Ms Robinson had gone outside to investigate when she saw the flashing emergency lights. He said: "She was told by first responders that it was Jason they were working on." He said she had been left "heartbroken" by her partner's death, which was confirmed at Royal Perth Hospital. He said: "We don't know what happened to her after this. I know the police have launched an inquiry into it. She has gone missing after notifying some of our friends of what's happened (to Mr Francis) and hasn't been found until the next morning." A police spokesman said: "Police will investigate this matter and prepare a report for the coroner, which will include the full circumstances leading to the woman's death." They have also appealed for witnesses to the collision in Scarborough's Stanley Street at around 8pm on Saturday. Mr Diamond said the couple had made a big impression on the community in their short time there. "They were two of the finest people you could meet. They well and truly ingrained themselves in our club. Both Jase on the field and Alice off the field. "They were an integral part (of the club)." He described Alice, who worked for a digital marketing company but was also a talented pencil sketch artist, as having "an infectious laugh" and being "very bubbly". He added: "Jason was the sort of person that's always got the time of day for everyone. Loved talking, loved working out, loved staying fit and healthy. "They were just genuine, down-to-earth, fantastic people." He said the mothers of both Mr Francis, who was in the process of becoming a firefighter in Australia, and Ms Robinson had expressed their appreciation for the funds raised. He said: "(They) thanked us for the support and have shown their appreciation for what the club and the community here is trying to do for them and Jase and Alice." Mr Diamond said the club hopes to hold a memorial service for the couple at a later date. The captain of Market Drayton Town football club in Shropshire, which Mr Francis had played for, also paid tribute. Paul McMullen said: "You young man were such a fine piece of our puzzle at MDTFC during our success and it was a pleasure to be part of it playing along side of you."

NASA wants you to celebrate New Years with its New Horizons space probe

Posted: 26 Dec 2018 07:54 PM PST

NASA wants you to celebrate New Years with its New Horizons space probeNASA's New Horizons spacecraft has been speeding through space since early 2006 and it's about to make what might be its most interesting flyby to date. After speeding past Jupiter and Pluto in the 12 years since its launch, the probe is about to have a very close encounter with a mysterious object in the outer Solar System called Ultima Thule. As luck would have it, it's going to meet its target on New Year's Day, and it's a pretty big deal for NASA. As we approach the probe's arrival at Ultima Thule, NASA is announcing its schedule of events related to the probe's flyby. The big show will begin on the afternoon of Monday, December 31st, and it'll kick off three days of news and briefings that will give us our best look yet at an extremely distant Solar System object. Here's the schedule of events that NASA has planned: As you can see, anyone who is staying up for the big ball to drop and kick off the new year on the East Coast will only have to wait a little while to catch live coverage of the New Horizons spacecraft's close approach to Ultima Thule. NASA will provide simulations of the flyby happening in real-time, but since a live feed from the spacecraft just isn't possible we'll have to wait a little while to see the actual images the probe captures. Later on New Years Day NASA will broadcast the signal acquisition from New Horizons, confirming that it gathered the data it was instructed to and building up some serious hype for the eventual reveal of the first images of the distant object. At 11:30 a.m. EST, NASA will hold a press briefing to show off whatever images and information the spacecraft has managed to send back, but that will really only be the tip of the iceberg for scientists. In the months to come, New Horizons will beam back a wealth of data that won't be available on day one. NASA will announced a"data download schedule" that will give us all a better sense of when to expect even more news about Ultima Thule.

America only wants the 'best' immigrants, but would its own people pass the test?

Posted: 26 Dec 2018 04:45 AM PST

America only wants the 'best' immigrants, but would its own people pass the test? The Trump administration's determination to revamp the American immigration system appears to be boundless. From its proposed redefinition of which public benefits immigrants can use without being labeled a "public charge" to its steep reduction in the US's refugee ceiling to its sudden withdrawal of legal status for immigrants from countries like Haiti and El Salvador to Donald Trump's recent flirtation with ending birthright citizenship, the administration appears willing to stretch, change or even break US laws en route to an ill-defined effort to remake American immigration around a "merit-based" approach. If you think of the US as a sandlot squad competing to outshine other nations in a never-ending, all-encompassing, resource-scarce Olympics, then sure, we clearly ought to treat immigration like a competitive draft.

Indonesia tsunami: Death toll rises to 373 amid fears Krakatoa could trigger another wave any time

Posted: 25 Dec 2018 01:21 AM PST

Indonesia tsunami: Death toll rises to 373 amid fears Krakatoa could trigger another wave any timeRescuers searched for more survivors and victims on debris-strewn beaches on Monday as Indonesia reeled from the second deadly tsunami to hit it this year. The waves that swept terrified people into the sea on Saturday night along the Sunda Strait followed an eruption and possible landslide on Anak Krakatau, whose name means "Child of Krakatoa and is one of the world's most infamous volcanic islands. Scientists said on Monday that a large chunk of the southern flank of the volcanic island may have slipped into the ocean just minutes before the tsunami hit. Such a scenario could strike anytime without any warning.   The death toll has risen to 373, with more than 1,000 people injured along the coastlines of western Java and southern Sumatra islands, the national disaster agency said on Monday. "The number of victims and damage will continue to rise," said agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. Aid agencies were quick to deploy to the area, located just a few hours drive from the Indonesian capital, Jakarta. The roads were challenging but passable, Aulia Arriani, a spokesperson for the Indonesian Red Cross told the Telegraph. Indonesia tsunami after eruption - in pictures "Our challenge is to find the missing and to evacuate the people who are still trapped. In the first phase of emergency response we will be evacuating people for the next two to three days," she said.  Ms Arriani added that local hospitals and clinics had been flooded with casualties and dead bodies. "People in the disaster are need food, drinking water, tarpaulins and medical help," she said.  The Indonesian Medical Association says it is sending more doctors and medical equipment and that many of the injured are in need of orthopedic and neurosurgery expertise. It says most patients are domestic tourists who were visiting the beach during the long holiday weekend. Indonesian earthquake and tsunami The tsunami that struck the island of Sulawesi on September 28 was accompanied by a powerful earthquake that gave residents a brief warning before the waves struck. On Saturday night, the ground did not shake beforehand to alert people to the oncoming wave that ripped buildings from their foundations in seconds and swept terrified concertgoers on a resort beach into the sea. Dramatic video posted on social media showed the Indonesian pop band Seventeen performing under a tent on Tanjung Lesung beach at a concert for employees of a state-owned electricity company.  At least four band members and support crew were killed, lead singer Riefian "Ifan" Fajarsyah told followers in a tearful Instagram account. The band's drummer was among the missing, as was his wife, Dylan Sahara, whose 26th birthday it was on Sunday. An Indonesia policeman searches for victims amongst the debris at the Mutiara Carita Cottages in Carita in Banten province  The worst-affected area was the Pandeglang region of Java's Banten province, which encompasses Ujung Kulon National Park and popular beaches, the agency said. Joko Widodo, the Indonesian president, who is scheduled to visit the stricken area on Monday, expressed his sympathy and ordered government agencies to respond quickly to the disaster. "My deep condolences to the victims in Banten and Lumpung provinces," he said. "Hopefully, those who are left have patience." In the city of Bandar Lampung on Sumatra, hundreds of residents took refuge at the governor's office, while at the popular resort area of Anyer beach on Java, some survivors wandered in the debris. A man walks through debris after hit by tsunami as they carry their belongings Many of those affected were domestic tourists enjoying the long holiday weekend, but foreigners were visiting the area ahead of Christmas as well. Some roads remained blocked by debris and traffic, with families streaming out of the area for fear of further tsunamis. Why a landslide was the likely trigger Scientists said on Monday that the consensus, based on satellite images and the information available, was that the collapse of a portion of the volcano triggered the killer waves. This aerial picture taken on December 23, 2018 by Bisnis Indonesia shows the Anak (Child) Krakatoa volcano erupting in the Sunda Straits off the coast of southern Sumatra and the western tip of Java Images captured by the European Space Agency's Sentinel-1 satellite showed that a large portion on the southern flank of the volcano slid off into the ocean. "Underwater landside is the leading theory," said Sam Taylor-Offord, a seismologist at GNS Science in Wellington. "So when that land pushes into the ocean ... it displaces the ocean surface causing the vertical displacement that causes the tsunami," he said, adding however that the lack of data and access made it impossible to ascertain this theory. Wow. This is the volcano "Child of Krakatoa" believed to have caused the Indonesian Tsunami. Video courtesy of Susi Air #tsunamipic.twitter.com/v99DT1KJ4N— David Lipson (@davidlipson) December 23, 2018 Anak Krakatau, halfway between Java and Sumatra, has been spewing ash and lava for months. It erupted about 24 minutes before the tsunami struck, and that could have triggered the landslide. Taylor-Offord said the eruption and "high noise environment" may be why the landslide was not recorded seismically. The fact the tsunami was triggered by a volcano, and not by an earthquake, may be the reason why no tsunami warning was signalled, scientists said. Coastal residents reported not seeing or feeling any warning signs, such as an earthquake or receding water along the shore, before waves up to 10 feet high surged in. Jose Borrero, coastal engineering expert specialising in tsunami hazards at eCoast Marine Consulting, said landslide-generated volcanic tsunami behave idiosyncratically, compared with tsunami generated by earthquakes, which are better studied. This is because there are so many different variables and there is a "sweet spot" of exactly the right speed and volume of rocks slipping into and sea and deeper to generate a wave. "In Indonesia, we've all been waiting for another big earthquake tsunami and then boom, here we have a volcanic landslide one," Mr Borrero said. Krakatoa eruption - map "I've seen a few bits of imagery that suggest there's some sort of slant collapse that may extend underwater but none of this will be confirmed until there can be an offshore survey where they go and map the sea floor." Anak Krakatau or "child of Krakatau" emerged from the Krakatau volcano, which in 1888 erupted with such force the blast was heard all the way in Perth, said Mika McKinnon, a geophysicist based in Vancouver, Canada. Further eruptions have continued from the massive crater left behind. Mr McKinnon said volcanoes were weak, sloppy heaps of loosely bound rocks all slanted downhill and they slip off all the time. There are no early warnings systems that can detect such landslide-driven tsunami and Anak Krakatau is so close to shore there would never have been enough time to react and clear out the population. "It's hard to identify landslide-triggered tsunami, especially quickly enough to issue useful warnings," said Mr McKinnon. "A similar event at Anak Krakatau might trigger another one, or it might not. Maybe a month later, or year from now. We will never know," she said.
