Rubio Bill Would Let 18-Year-Olds In D.C. Buy Assault-Style Guns -- Despite What He Just SaidWASHINGTON ― Following the deadly school shooting in his home state, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) last week expressed support for raising the minimum age for certain gun purchases from 18 to 21, yet he is not backing away from a bill he proposed that would reduce restrictions on young people obtaining such weapons in the nation's capital. "I absolutely believe that in this country, if you are 18 years of age, you should not be able to buy a rifle," he said at a CNN town hall last week, where he faced questions from students and parents affected by the Feb. 14 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Supreme Court takes case of death row inmate who forgot the crimeA month after halting his execution, the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday agreed to take up the case of an Alabama convicted murderer whose attorneys argue should be spared the death penalty because strokes have wiped out his memory of committing the crime. The justices agreed to decide whether executing 67-year-old Vernon Madison, convicted of fatally shooting a police officer in 1985, would violate the U.S. Constitution's Eighth Amendment bar against cruel and unusual punishment. The Supreme Court has previously imposed some limits on capital punishment relating to people with intellectual disabilities and mental illnesses.

Russia orders daily truce for evacuations from Syria's eastern Ghouta

Russia orders daily truce for evacuations from Syria's eastern GhoutaBy Angus McDowall and Jack Stubbs BEIRUT/MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia said on Monday it would establish an evacuation corridor and implement a five-hour daily truce to allow people to leave Syria's eastern Ghouta, after a U.N. Security Council resolution demanding a 30-day ceasefire across the entire country. It appeared to make no mention, however, of allowing relief supplies to enter the territory, where 400,000 people are living under siege and bombardment. Over the past week, Syria's army and its allies have subjected the rebel-held enclave near Damascus to one of the heaviest bombardments of the seven-year war, killing hundreds.

US Supreme Court declines to review order forcing Trump administration to continue DACA

US Supreme Court declines to review order forcing Trump administration to continue DACALittle over a week before the programme is scheduled to expire, the United States Supreme Court has declined to review a federal judge's order that the Trump administration must continue the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programme. The refusal to hear the case represents a temporary win for immigration advocates who have been fighting to keep the programme in place after President Donald Trump announced last year he would let it expire. Nearly 700,000 undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children -- a group known colloquially as Dreamers -- have been able to receive work permits under the programme, which was started in 2012 by former President Barack Obama.

John Oliver announces he's running for prime minister of Italy because why the heck not

Posted: 26 Feb 2018 06:50 AM PST

John Oliver announces he's running for prime minister of Italy because why the heck notA television personality becoming leader of a country? That's preposterous. SEE ALSO: John Oliver emerges victorious against the man he once called a 'geriatric Dr. Evil' On Sunday night, John Oliver covered the impending Italian election. He ran down the list of candidates, presenting Italy's current political situation as a dire one, particularly given the apparent comeback of ex-prime minister and waxwork come-to-life, Silvio Berlusconi. Oliver has a new option for Italian people. He consulted "half a dozen" Italian legal experts who told him that he can't run for Italian prime minister but equally "admitted" that the Italian constitution does not specifically prohibit a non-politician, or even a non-citizen from running. So he's doing it anyway. "Yes Italy, my candidacy for prime minister may be a complete and total farce," proclaimed Oliver in front of a huge and perfectly satirical toy volcano. "But be honest — incredibly, I am far from your worst option."
