Congress to focus on background checks after Florida massacre Posted: 27 Feb 2018 10:31 AM PST By Zachary Fagenson and Richard Cowan FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla./WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican leaders of the U.S. Congress on Tuesday said they were focused on improving background checks for potential gun buyers, less than two weeks after 17 people were killed at a Florida high school by a man with an AR-15 assault-style rifle. The second-deadliest shooting at a U.S. public school has stirred the long-running U.S. debate over gun rights, prompting President Donald Trump to float potential responses including arming teachers or raising the minimum age to buy firearms. House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan said lawmakers would focus on improving background checks for potential gun buyers. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

U.S. threatens action against Iran after Russia U.N. veto Posted: 27 Feb 2018 06:53 AM PST By Michelle Nichols UNITED NATIONS/TEGUCIGALPA (Reuters) - The United States threatened unilateral action against Iran on Monday after Russia vetoed a western bid for the United Nations Security Council to call out Tehran for failing to prevent its weapons from falling into the hands of Yemen's Houthi group. "If Russia is going to continue to cover for Iran then the U.S. and our partners need to take action on our own. If we're not going to get action on the council then we have to take our own actions," U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley told reporters during a visit to Honduran capital Tegucigalpa. Supreme Court takes case of death row inmate who forgot the crime Posted: 27 Feb 2018 05:49 AM PST A month after halting his execution, the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday agreed to take up the case of an Alabama convicted murderer whose attorneys argue should be spared the death penalty because strokes have wiped out his memory of committing the crime. The justices agreed to decide whether executing 67-year-old Vernon Madison, convicted of fatally shooting a police officer in 1985, would violate the U.S. Constitution's Eighth Amendment bar against cruel and unusual punishment. The Supreme Court has previously imposed some limits on capital punishment relating to people with intellectual disabilities and mental illnesses. Russia orders daily truce for evacuations from Syria's eastern Ghouta Posted: 26 Feb 2018 03:03 PM PST By Angus McDowall and Jack Stubbs BEIRUT/MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia said on Monday it would establish an evacuation corridor and implement a five-hour daily truce to allow people to leave Syria's eastern Ghouta, after a U.N. Security Council resolution demanding a 30-day ceasefire across the entire country. It appeared to make no mention, however, of allowing relief supplies to enter the territory, where 400,000 people are living under siege and bombardment. Over the past week, Syria's army and its allies have subjected the rebel-held enclave near Damascus to one of the heaviest bombardments of the seven-year war, killing hundreds. US Supreme Court declines to review order forcing Trump administration to continue DACA Posted: 26 Feb 2018 02:32 PM PST Little over a week before the programme is scheduled to expire, the United States Supreme Court has declined to review a federal judge's order that the Trump administration must continue the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programme. The refusal to hear the case represents a temporary win for immigration advocates who have been fighting to keep the programme in place after President Donald Trump announced last year he would let it expire. Nearly 700,000 undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children -- a group known colloquially as Dreamers -- have been able to receive work permits under the programme, which was started in 2012 by former President Barack Obama.
