ANC orders Zuma to step down as South African president Posted: 13 Feb 2018 07:24 AM PST By Alexander Winning and James Macharia JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa's ruling party ordered Jacob Zuma on Tuesday to step down as head of state after marathon talks over the fate of a leader whose scandal-plagued years in power darkened and divided Nelson Mandela's post-apartheid 'Rainbow Nation'. Leading members of the African National Congress now want new party leader Cyril Ramaphosa to replace Zuma as president, ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule told a news conference. Police officer fired for not shooting black suspect wins $175,000 compensation Posted: 13 Feb 2018 05:27 AM PST A former police officer who claimed he was fired for not shooting an armed black suspect during a standoff has settled a wrongful termination suit with his former department for $175,000 (£126,000). "At the end of the day, I'm happy to put this chapter of my life to bed," said Stephen Mader, 27, in a statement. Mr Mader was the first officer to respond to an incident, when he arrived at a home in Weirton, West Virginia, on 6 May 2016, where he found Ronald Williams, 23, distraught and wanting to commit "suicide by cop," according to his lawsuit. Instacart, a San Francisco-based company that shops for and delivers groceries from about 200 retailers including Target Corp and Costco Wholesale Corp, said the new funding values the company at about $4.2 billion. The party's powerful 107-member national executive committee (NEC) met for 13 hours at a hotel outside Pretoria, and decided it would "recall" Zuma from his post, several local media outlets said. "It took a brutal 13 hours, but the ANC's national executive committee has decided to recall President Jacob Zuma as head of state," the Times Live news website said, citing unnamed sources in the talks.
