Top Vatican cardinal says never raised abuse concerns with superiors

Posted: 01 Mar 2016 03:21 PM PST

Australian Cardinal George Pell arrives at the Quirinale hotel in Rome, ItalyBy Philip Pullella and Jane Wardell ROME/SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australian Cardinal George Pell, the highest-ranking Vatican official to testify on systemic sexual abuse of children by clergy in the Roman Catholic Church, on Tuesday said he never notified his superiors in the 1970s about rumors of abuse. The Vatican's treasurer told Australia's Royal Commission into Institutional Response to Child Sexual Abuse that he had heard reports of sexual abuse by at least one priest who was moved to another parish, but assumed senior clergy were dealing with the problem. Given Pell's high rank within the church, his testimony to the Australian inquiry into sexual abuse cases that occurred decades ago has taken on wider implications about the accountability of church leaders.

After a decade of silence, will Justice Clarence Thomas find his voice?

Posted: 29 Feb 2016 04:32 PM PST

U.S. Associate Justice Clarence Thomas poses for an official picture with other justices at the U.S Supreme Court in WashingtonSupreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas broke a decade-long silence from the bench on Monday, provoking audible gasps in the chamber and, perhaps, indicating that he may be more willing to speak up in the future following the death of Justice Antonin Scalia earlier this month. Justice Thomas's remarks came near the end of oral arguments in a case regarding a federal law that bans people convicted of domestic violence from owning guns. Ten minutes from the end of the hourlong session, Thomas asked Justice Department lawyer Ilana Eisenstein whether a misdemeanor conviction of any other law "suspends a constitutional right," prompting gasps from lawyers and journalists in the chamber.
