One rescued in Mexico mine explosion, others still missing Posted: 04 Aug 2012 12:36 PM PDT MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - One miner has been rescued following a coal mine collapse in the northern Mexican state of Coahuila Friday morning, and five more remain trapped, the mine operator said. The explosion was triggered when a large amount of methane gas ignited, causing 100 metric tons (1.1023 tons) of coal to collapse, mine owner Altos Hornos de Mexico (AHMSA) said in a statement. Nearly 300 miners evacuated the mine without incident, the company said. Coahuila's public safety secretary, Jorge Luis Moran, told Milenio television that rescue workers were trying to locate the missing miners. ... |

'Atrocious' outfits horrify London style tsars Posted: 04 Aug 2012 05:30 AM PDT LONDON (Reuters) - Atrocious. At least that's the verdict of one of London's dedicated followers of fashion on the uniforms doled out to over 90,000 staff of the Olympic Games. For the tsars and tsaritsas of British fashion, the outfits -- either a juxtaposition of purple and red on sports jackets or constellations of pink and magenta diamonds on unfitted t-shirts -- are an insult to London's reputation as the hippest city on earth. "Atrocious, artless, cynical," is the way Stephen Bayley, one of Britain's leading voices on style, taste and contemporary design, described the uniforms. ... |

Syrian army, rebels clash near Aleppo TV station Posted: 04 Aug 2012 04:24 AM PDT ALEPPO, Syria (Reuters) - Syrian forces clashed with rebels around Aleppo's television and radio station on Saturday, activists said, and a local rebel commander said his fighters were preparing for a "strong offensive" by government forces on the country's largest city. Syrian troops back by armor stormed the last opposition bastion in Damascus on Friday in a drive to crush a rebel offensive that coincided with a bomb attack that killed four of President Bashar al-Assad's top security officials. ... |
Wildfires blaze across drought-plagued Oklahoma Posted: 04 Aug 2012 04:24 AM PDT OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - Wildfires burned out of control on Friday in Oklahoma, destroying homes and shutting down highways in a state that has suffered 18 straight days of 100-plus degree temperatures and persistent drought. Emergency officials counted 11 different wildfires around the state, with at least 65 homes destroyed in parched areas north and south of Oklahoma City and south of Tulsa. Oklahoma joins several states that have been plagued by wildfires this summer, including Colorado, Arkansas and Nebraska. Fires are being fed by a widespread drought. ... |
Afghan parliament votes to dismiss defense, interior ministers Posted: 04 Aug 2012 03:50 AM PDT KABUL (Reuters) - Afghanistan's parliament voted on Saturday to dismiss both the interior and defense ministers over continued cross-border shelling which the Afghan government has blamed on neighboring Pakistan's army, as well as other issues. The fractious parliament voted to remove the pair despite their promises to reinforce the border, although President Hamid Karzai has previously opted to keep ministers in their roles in acting capacity after similar votes. Syrian army moves on rebels in Aleppo, Damascus Posted: 03 Aug 2012 10:15 PM PDT Syrian forces stormed the last rebel stronghold in the capital Damascus in tanks and armoured vehicles on Friday and blasted artillery at rebels in Aleppo, where the United Nations said the army was preparing a massive assault. The violence came within hours of former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan quitting as international peace envoy for Syria, underlining the impotence of mediation efforts in the 17-month-old uprising against President Bashar al-Assad. A senior U.N. ... |
