Syrian forces hit mosque with barrel bomb, kill 11 Posted: 04 Feb 2014 12:21 PM PST BEIRUT (AP) — Men pull a girl from the rubble and haul her onto a dirty sheet of plastic, while another child, coated in white dust save for a red streak of blood from his nose, lies with his crushed leg dangling off a gurney — the grisly aftermath from the dropping of a crude "barrel bomb" by Syrian forces on the city of Aleppo. |

A look back at the allegations against Woody Allen Posted: 04 Feb 2014 11:21 AM PST NEW YORK (AP) — "Cries and Whispers: The Ugly Explosion of an Unconventional Family," announced the August 31, 1992 cover of Time magazine, which bore Woody Allen's bespectacled face. The sordid saga involving Allen and erstwhile romantic partner Mia Farrow had indeed exploded into the public consciousness days earlier. The most sensational part: an allegation that the celebrated director had taken their adopted daughter Dylan, 7, into an attic-like space at Farrow's Connecticut home and molested her. |

Microsoft names Nadella as next CEO, Thompson as chairman Posted: 04 Feb 2014 06:45 AM PST Microsoft Corp named company veteran Satya Nadella as its next chief executive officer on Tuesday, ending a longer-than-expected search for a new leader after Steve Ballmer announced his intention to retire in August. Nadella is only the third CEO in Microsoft's 39-year history, following co-founder Bill Gates and Ballmer. Microsoft also said John Thompson, lead independent director, would succeed Gates as chairman. Microsoft faces a slow erosion of its PC-centric Windows and Office franchises and needs to somehow challenge Apple Inc and Google Inc in the new realm of mobile computing. |
Britain says it advised India on 1984 Golden Temple attack Posted: 04 Feb 2014 05:31 AM PST Foreign Secretary William Hague said on Tuesday an official investigation had shown Britain did advise India on planning a deadly attack against Sikh separatists in the Golden Temple at Amritsar in 1984, but said its advice had limited impact. Prime Minister David Cameron ordered a review into the matter last month after newly released official papers suggested that Margaret Thatcher, then prime minister, had sent an officer from the elite SAS special air service to advise the Indians on the raid. "It had limited impact on the tragic events that unfolded at the temple three months later." There had been no link between the provision of this advice and British defence sales to India, Hague added, and there was no record of Britain receiving advance notice of the attack. Hague's words are likely to upset Sikh groups and could damage India's dynastic ruling Congress party, which faces an uphill struggle to be re-elected in national polls due by May. It was in power at the time of the raid. |

Afghanistan's Karzai in secret talks with Taliban: report Posted: 04 Feb 2014 02:01 AM PST Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai has been holding secret talks with Taliban officials in the hope of persuading them to make peace with his government, the New York Times reported on Tuesday, citing unnamed Afghan and Western officials. Karzai's spokesman could not reached for comment. President Barack Obama, frustrated by Karzai's refusal to sign the accord, was due to meet top commanders at the White House on Tuesday to discuss the future of the U.S. mission in Afghanistan. This would leave Afghanistan's fledgling security forces to fight the Taliban insurgency alone and diplomats fear they would struggle to cope without U.S. financial and military support. |

U.S. denies senators' claims Kerry said Syria policy is failing Posted: 03 Feb 2014 02:27 PM PST The US administration Monday stood by its policy on Syria denying that Secretary of State John Kerry had called for a change of strategy and to arm opposition rebels. Quoting influential Republican senators, some US media claimed that in a meeting on the sidelines of a security conference in Munich the top US diplomat had said US policy in Syria was failing and it was time for a change. |
Web companies give first look at secret gov't data requests Posted: 03 Feb 2014 01:40 PM PST Facebook, Microsoft, Yahoo and Google on Monday began publishing details about the number of secret government requests for data they receive, hoping to show limited involvement in controversial surveillance efforts. The tech industry has pushed for greater transparency on government data requests, seeking to shake off concerns about their involvement in vast, surreptitious surveillance programs revealed last summer by former spy contractor Edward Snowden. The government said last month it would relax rules restricting what details companies can disclose about Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) court orders they receive for user information. Several companies, including Google and Microsoft, sued the government last year, seeking the ability to disclose more of that data. |
