Israel mulls reprisals for Palestinian-Hamas deal Posted: 24 Apr 2014 08:31 AM PDT Israel's security cabinet met Thursday to weigh its retaliation to a unity deal struck between the Palestinian leadership and the Hamas rulers of Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reacted angrily to Wednesday's agreement between the rival factions accusing Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas of choosing "Hamas, not peace". They were not expected to order a complete halt to US-brokered peace talks with the Palestinians, however, despite the announcement by a Netanyahu aide of the cancellation of a scheduled meeting on Wednesday evening, the broadcaster said. Netanyahu's office described the deal between Abbas and Hamas, which opposes all peace talks with Israel, as "very serious". |

And the canonization of two well-loved popes, John Paul II and John XXIII, on Sunday is feeding a seemingly endless appetite for fresh relics. |

Still, he acknowledged those penalties may do little to influence Vladimir Putin's handling of the crisis in Ukraine. |

Soldier accused of killing teens in Iraq Posted: 23 Apr 2014 06:34 PM PDT JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. (AP) — The two unarmed Iraqi brothers posed no threat as they herded cattle in a palm grove where a U.S. Army reconnaissance team was hidden one day seven years ago. But then-Staff Sgt. Michael Barbera took a knee, leveled his rifle and killed them — from nearly 200 yards away, a former fellow soldier said Wednesday at a preliminary hearing in the case. |
