As many as 75 scientists working in U.S. federal government laboratories in Atlanta may have been exposed to live anthrax bacteria and are being offered treatment to prevent infection, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday. They then transferred the samples, which may have contained live bacteria, to lower-security CDC labs not equipped to handle live anthrax. Dr Paul Meechan, director of the environmental health and safety compliance office at the CDC, said the agency discovered the potential exposure on the evening of Friday, June 13, and immediately began contacting individuals working in the labs who may have unknowingly handled live anthrax bacteria. "No employee has shown any symptoms of anthrax illness," Meechan told Reuters.

Would-be bomber who caused Stockholm lock-down gives up to police

A man who had threatened to set off explosives in the heart of Stockholm on Thursday gave himself up and was taken away by police, a spokesman said. Police had sealed off large parts of the capital city and evacuated buildings as they negotiated with the man who said he was carrying explosives and had barricaded himself inside a building near the headquarters of the main government party. "He came out, he showed he wasn't dangerous and he could be detained without drama, and he has now been taken away from there ... What remains for us is to search the premises to make sure there are no dangerous objects," police spokesman Kjell Lindgren said.

Lazarat has long blighted Albania's efforts to shed the image of a Balkan badlands since it threw off communism in 1991. With the fruits of its labor turning up in Italy, Greece and, last year, Germany, Albania has come under increasing pressure from the European Union to crack down on drug producers long considered untouchable, out of reach of the law thanks to a web of corrupt connections to the police and politicians.
