LOS ANGELES (AP) — Nancy Reagan, the helpmate, backstage adviser and fierce protector of Ronald Reagan in his journey from actor to president — and finally during his 10-year battle with Alzheimer's disease — has died. She was 94.

(Reuters) - Nancy Reagan, the former actress who was fiercely protective of husband Ronald Reagan through a Hollywood career, eight years in the White House, an assassination attempt and Alzheimer's disease, died Sunday at age 94, the Reagan library said. Reagan, who became one of the most influential first ladies in U.S. history during her Republican husband's presidency from 1981 to 1989, died Sunday morning at her home in Los Angeles of congestive heart failure. She will be buried next to her husband, at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, the statement said. ...

(AP Photo, File)Islamic State has claimed responsibility for a suicide attack with an explosive-laden truck on an Iraqi police checkpoint at the entrance of the city of Hilla, south of Baghdad, killing or wounding at least 60 people. Responsibility was claimed in a posting on the website of the Amaq news agency, which supports Islamic State. "The checkpoint, the nearby police station were destroyed as well as some houses and dozens of cars." Hilla is the capital of the province of Babylon, a predominantly Shi'ite region with some Sunni presence.
