May seeks last-minute Brexit tie-breaker with opposition Posted: 03 Apr 2019 07:53 AM PDT Prime Minister Theresa May was to meet on Wednesday with the leader of Britain's main opposition party in a bid to thrash out a Brexit compromise just days before a deadline to leave the EU. The British premier was to hold talks with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn the day after announcing she would ask Brussels for another "short" delay to Brexit to avoid crashing out next week. The move, which followed a long cabinet meeting on Tuesday, angered Brexit hardliners in her party as it opens the possibility of Britain aiming for closer economic ties with the European Union after leaving. Auto companies have been warning the White House privately that it would lead to the idling of U.S. plants within days because they rely on prompt deliveries of components made in Mexico. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the largest U.S. business lobbying group, has been in contact with the White House to discuss the "very negative economic consequences that would occur across the country," said Neil Bradley, the group's top lobbyist, on a call with reporters.
