China threatens retaliation for Trump's planned tariff hike Posted: 02 Aug 2019 08:49 AM PDT China on Friday threatened retaliation if U.S. President Donald Trump's planned tariff hikes go ahead, while the renewed acrimony between the two biggest global economies sent stock markets tumbling. China's government accused Trump of violating his June agreement with President Xi Jinping to revive negotiations aimed at ending a costly fight over Beijing's trade surplus and technology ambitions. Trump rattled financial markets with Thursday's surprise announcement of 10% tariffs on $300 billion of Chinese imports, effective Sept. 1.

The US and the Taliban are soon expected to begin their eighth round of talks in Doha to reach a deal that would end America's nearly 18-year involvement in Afghanistan. The Washington Post reported that an initial deal to end the war would see US troop numbers in the country fall to as low as 8,000 from their current level of around 14,000. Robert F. Kennedy's granddaughter dies at family compound in Mass.: New York Times Posted: 01 Aug 2019 09:02 PM PDT The Times identified the victim as Saoirse Kennedy Hill, a granddaughter of Robert Kennedy and family matriarch Ethel Kennedy, 91. Reuters could not immediately confirm the report with Massachusetts authorities.
