Johnson's commanding election victory this week may let him fulfil his campaign promise to "get Brexit done," but it could also imperil the future of the United Kingdom of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Scotland and Northern Ireland didn't vote for Brexit, didn't embrace this week's Conservative electoral landslide -- and now may be drifting permanently away from their neighbors. China welcomes preliminary deal in trade war it blames on US Posted: 14 Dec 2019 01:52 AM PST China put a positive face Saturday on a first-step trade agreement that dials down a trade war it blames the U.S. for starting. "It at least stabilizes the situation and lays a foundation for the next round of trade talks or canceling additional tariffs in the future," said Tu Xinquan, a professor at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing. The two countries announced a "Phase 1" agreement Friday under which both sides will reduce tariffs and China will buy more U.S. farm products. Taiwan police shoot man suspected of planting explosive device: media Posted: 13 Dec 2019 07:58 PM PST Police in southern Taiwan shot a man on Saturday suspected of planting a possible explosive device outside a campaign office for the island's main opposition party, the Kuomintang, the official Central News Agency reported. Taiwan holds presidential and parliamentary elections on Jan. 11, and campaigning is in full swing with the Kuomintang challenging the ruling Democratic Progressive Party of President Tsai Ing-wen, who is currently far ahead in the polls.
