Giant ferris wheel to offer view of New York City landscape Posted: 27 Sep 2012 01:04 PM PDT NEW YORK (Reuters) - A plan to build the world's tallest ferris wheel on New York's Staten Island, offering sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline, could hold the answer to a long-elusive goal: putting the most-overlooked of city's five boroughs on the tourist map. Romney slams Obama on defense cuts Posted: 27 Sep 2012 10:35 AM PDT SPRINGFIELD, Va.—For the third straight day, Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama campaigned in the same state, with Romney arguing before an audience of military veterans that potential cuts to the defense budget are "unthinkable and devastating." Speaking in the battleground state at an American Legion post outside Washington, D.C., Romney blamed Obama for planned [...] |
Political puzzle: Voting for candidates who violate our beliefs Posted: 27 Sep 2012 10:18 AM PDT Most of us assume that our vote for our chosen candidate accurately--or at least tolerably--represents our beliefs. In truth, though, our politics frequently violate the coherence of our beliefs. This was vividly impressed upon me six years ago, when, with a friend, I stumbled into a minor international incident while working in Vietnam with a fellow journalist. |

Kareem Serageldin, former global head of structure credit trading for Credit Suisse, was arrested on Wednesday in London where he has been since U.S. prosecutors filed charges against him earlier this year. Chinese court upholds fine against dissident Ai Weiwei Posted: 27 Sep 2012 05:17 AM PDT BEIJING (Reuters) - A Chinese court upheld a $2.4 million tax evasion fine against China's most famous dissident Ai Weiwei on Thursday, ending his long legal battle with the authorities but paving the way for him to be jailed if he does not pay. The loss of Ai's second appeal in a higher court means that the world-renowned artist could risk arrest if he does not pay a remaining fine of around 6.6 million yuan ($1.05 million), in a case that has further tarnished China's poor human rights reputation. He has paid a bond of 8. ... |
