In Washington, a 32-year-old woman was swarmed by teenagers on bikes, and one clocked her in the face. In Jersey City, a 46-year-old man died after someone sucker-punched him and he struck his head on an iron fence. |

Kennedy cousin Skakel is freed on bail in 1975 murder Posted: 21 Nov 2013 09:08 AM PST Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel was freed on bail on Thursday after spending the past 11 years in prison for the 1975 murder of a teenage neighbor in Greenwich, Connecticut. Stamford Superior Court Judge Gary White ordered Skakel, 53, a nephew of Ethel Kennedy, released to await a new trial in the murder of Martha Moxley. Both were 15 at the time she was beaten to death with a golf club, but Skakel was not charged until decades later, and was prosecuted as an adult rather than as a juvenile. The bail hearing came a month after Skakel's new lawyers convinced another judge to overturn his 2002 murder conviction because his previous lawyer provided "ineffective counsel" during the trial. |

Karzai says Afghanistan needs U.S. security deal, but little trust Posted: 21 Nov 2013 02:54 AM PST By Hamid Shalizi and Jessica Donati KABUL (Reuters) - Afghan President Hamid Karzai told a meeting of tribal elders and political leaders on Thursday they should support a security pact with the United States, but acknowledged there was little trust between the two nations. A Loya Jirga, or grand council, involving about 2,500 delegates convened a day after Karzai and Washington reached agreement on a pact defining the shape of the U.S. military presence after a 2014 drawdown of a multinational NATO force. I don't trust them and they don't trust me," Karzai told the assembly. "During the past 10 years I have fought with them and they have made propaganda against me." Delegates at the five-day Loya Jirga, many of them bearded men with elaborate turbans but with women among them too, will debate the draft and decide whether to accept it - whether they want U.S. troops to stay, or leave Afghan forces to fight the Taliban insurgency alone. |
