Iran nuclear deal unlikely as split emerges in Western camp -diplomats Posted: 09 Nov 2013 11:10 AM PST By Louis Charbonneau and Yeganeh Torbati GENEVA (Reuters) - Barring a last-minute breakthrough, talks between Iran and six world powers on curbing Tehran's nuclear ambitions were set to end without an agreement on Saturday as a split emerged between France and the other Western powers, diplomats said. The latest round of talks began on Thursday and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry unexpectedly arrived on Friday to help narrow remaining differences on a deal that would freeze parts of Iran's atomic program in exchange for sanctions relief. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that if there was no agreement this weekend, "the process will continue in one week or 10 days". French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius also said it was not clear the delegations would succeed in nailing down an acceptable interim deal that would begin to defuse fears of a stealthy Iranian advance towards nuclear arms capability. |

Over 100 dead as typhoon slams central Philippines Posted: 09 Nov 2013 08:38 AM PST TACLOBAN, Philippines (AP) — The central Philippine city of Tacloban was in ruins Saturday, a day after being ravaged by one of the strongest typhoons on record, as horrified residents spoke of storm surges as high as trees and authorities said they were expecting a "very high number of fatalities." |
At least 1,000 killed in Philippine city: Red Cross Posted: 09 Nov 2013 08:22 AM PST The Philippine Red Cross estimated that more than 1,000 people were killed in the coastal city of Tacloban and at least 200 in hard-hit Samar province when one of the strongest typhoons ever to make landfall slammed into the country. Gwendolyn Pang, secretary general of the Philippine Red Cross, said the numbers came from preliminary reports by Red Cross teams in Tacloban and Samar, among the most devastated areas hit by Typhoon Haiyan on Friday. "An estimated more than 1,000 bodies were seen floating in Tacloban as reported by our Red Cross teams," she told Reuters. |

World powers set for new round of Iran nuke talks Posted: 09 Nov 2013 06:16 AM PST GENEVA (AP) — Iran and six world powers remain split on terms of a nuclear deal because Tehran is resisting demands that it suspends work on a plutonium-producing reactor and downgrade its stockpile of higher-enriched uranium to a level that cannot quickly be turned into the core of an atomic bomb, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Saturday. |

Local fight with Mexican cartel a small victory Posted: 08 Nov 2013 03:42 PM PST TEPALCATEPEC, Mexico (AP) — For lime grower Hipolito Mora, it was time to organize and pick up arms when a packing company controlled by a brutal drug cartel refused to buy his fruit. For Bishop Miguel Patino Velazquez, it was seeing civilians forced to fight back with their own guns that made him speak out. For Leticia, a lime picker too afraid of retribution to give her last name, it was the day she saw a taxi driver kidnapped in front of his two young children that convinced her to join those taking the law into their own hands. |
