Another headache for Christie: Class-action lawsuit

Posted: 11 Jan 2014 12:30 PM PST

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie gives a news conference in TrentonBy Andrew Longstreth NEW YORK (Reuters) - As if he did not have enough headaches, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is facing a potential class-action lawsuit arising from the monster traffic jams his aides are accused of creating, although experts question the strength of the case. A personal injury lawyer from Fort Lee, New Jersey, filed the case in federal court on behalf of six local residents who missed work or suffered other alleged damages due to the traffic jam last September. Many more people could join the plaintiffs if the court allows the case to become a class action. The lawsuit was filed on Thursday, a day after New Jersey officials released emails that appeared to show the Republican governor's staff plotting a massive traffic jam in September, seemingly to retaliate against the Democratic mayor of Fort Lee for not endorsing Christie's re-election campaign.

FILE - In this Aug. 27, 1997 file photo, Ron Unz, poses inside the Las Families Del Pueblo child care center in Los Angeles. Unz, a Silicon Valley multimillionaire and registered Republican who once ran for governor and, briefly, U.S. Senate, wants state voters to endorse the wage jump that he predicts would nourish the economy and lift low-paid workers from dependency on food stamps and other assistance bankrolled by taxpayers. Two decades ago, Unz tried to unseat then-Gov. Pete Wilson, a fellow Republican. After a long break on the political sidelines, Unz's reappearance has startled members of both major parties, and his proposal, if it goes to voters in November, could unsettle races from governor to Congress. (AP Photo/Kevork Djansezian)LOS ANGELES (AP) — Democrats across the nation are eager to make increasing the minimum wage a defining campaign issue in 2014, but in California a proposal to boost the pay rate to $12 an hour is coming from a different point on the political compass.

Taliban talks going nowhere despite secret meets

FILE - In this Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004 file photo, Afghan President Hamid Karzai, left, accompanied by the presidential candidate and regional commander General Abdul Rashid Dostum applaud during his visit to Shiberghan, about 400 kilometers (250 miles) northwest of the capital Kabul. Secret contacts are again reported to be underway for an Afghanistan peace deal, but neither analysts nor the belligerents see hope they will succeed. Many wonder whether Karzai even wants a peace deal before the April election. He is ineligible for a third term, and stalling until he is out of office would punt the tough decisions to his successor. And the Taliban still needs to prove it can be trusted not to exact revenge for alleged atrocities by Afghan leaders. The ill-feeling resonates in the case of Rashid Dostum, an Uzbek warlord who the Taliban, as well as Western human rights organizations, accuses of killing thousands of surrendering Taliban during the U.S.-led 2001 invasion.
