Target apologizes for data breach, retailers embrace security upgrade Posted: 13 Jan 2014 10:27 AM PST By Ross Kerber, Phil Wahba and Jim Finkle BOSTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Target Corp began a major public relations effort on Monday to apologize to customers for an unprecedented cyber attack on its network, but the No. 3 U.S. retailer was vague in providing details about what it knew and when. The company has so far disclosed that the breach started in late November and lasted 19 days over the peak holiday shopping season, resulting in the theft of about 40 million credit card records and 70 million other records containing customer data. Target is trying to woo back customers after sales dropped off at the end of the holiday season. Its campaign included full-page newspaper advertisements on Monday apologizing for the attack and the first interview since the breach by chief executive Gregg Steinhafel. |

Israel honors Sharon at state funeral Posted: 13 Jan 2014 01:19 AM PST By Crispian Balmer and Matt Spetalnick JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel paid homage to former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon at the first of two funeral services to be held on Monday for a man hailed as a war hero at home but seen by many in the Arab world as a war criminal. U.S. Vice President Joe Biden joined the somber ceremony in front of the Israeli parliament, Sharon's coffin draped in the Israel's blue and white flag, bathed in winter sunshine. "We are accompanying to his final resting place today, a soldier, an exceptional soldier, a commander who knew how to win," said Israeli President Shimon Peres. Sharon died at the age of 85 on Saturday after spending the last eight years in a coma caused by a massive stroke. |

Haiti marks fourth anniversary of quake that killed 250,000 Posted: 12 Jan 2014 07:11 PM PST Port-au-Prince (AFP) - Haiti marked four years on Sunday since a violent earthquake shattered the impoverished nation, which is still struggling to recover from the widespread devastation that killed 250,000 people. President Michel Martelly, who has faced protests over the slow pace of rebuilding, declared the anniversary a "day of reflection and commemoration." "35 seconds ... That's all time that was needed, on January 12, 2010, to spread darkness over Haiti. Wearing white as he addressed thousands of Haitians gathered for a minute of silence in memory of the catastrophe's victims, Martelly also thanked "the friends of Haiti who came from all over to help." |
