California sheriff 'concerned' by slow response to jail escape Posted: 31 Jan 2016 10:15 AM PST Hours after the last two fugitives were captured, Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens said she had ordered an investigation into how the trio broke out of a maximum-security jail in Santa Ana and went unnoticed for about 16 hours, according to a letter her office released late on Saturday. "I have been very clear from the onset of the jail escape investigation that I am deeply concerned about the length of time it took to recognize that three maximum security inmates were unaccounted for," Hutchens wrote in response to a letter she had received from the Association of Orange County Deputy Sheriffs about the escapes. "I have initiated an internal administrative investigation to determine the facts of what occurred, contributing factors to the escape and inmate count procedures," Hutchens continued in the letter, which she later disclosed in an emailed statement. Saudi police arrest 9 American 'terror' suspects: report Posted: 31 Jan 2016 07:34 AM PST Saudi authorities have arrested nine American citizens among 33 "terror" suspects rounded up over the past days, the Saudi Gazette newspaper reported on Sunday. It did not say if any of the "terror suspects" was linked to the Islamic State group, which has claimed several deadly attacks against security forces and Shiites in the kingdom in recent months. The Saudi Gazette said some 532 IS suspects accused of plotting attacks in the kingdom are being questioned ahead of their trial at the criminal court in Riyadh. Ministry: Blasts close to Damascus' main Shiite shrine kill 45 Posted: 31 Jan 2016 04:58 AM PST AMMAN/BEIRUT (Reuters) - At least 45 people were killed and 110 wounded on Sunday by a car bomb and two suicide bombers in the Sayeda Zeinab district of Damascus, where Syria's holiest Shi'ite shrine is located, the interior ministry said. Syrian state news agency SANA, quoting an interior ministry source, said a group of militants had detonated a car bomb near a public transport garage in the neighborhood's Koua Sudan area.
