Official Samsung teaser confirms the Galaxy S8 will launch March 29th Posted: 26 Feb 2017 01:37 PM PST In an otherwise tablet-dominated press release in Barcelona, Samsung found 15 seconds to tease its next big smartphone for all of us. As expected, we're going to have to wait a month longer for the Galaxy S8 launch, but it could well be worth it. A Samsung invite sent out confirms that the launch event is going to happen in New York City on March 29th. Until then, this teaser trailer is all we've got to go on. https://twitter.com/SamMobiles/status/835927473896435713 The teaser takes us through the history of the cellphone, beginning in the 1980s. It's a showcase of design, decade-by-decade, with the oh-so-subtle hint being that the Galaxy S8 is going to dominate 2017. If we're really reading into it, the teaser also seems to confirm that there will be very little bezel on the side, no physical home buttons (or buttons of any kind), and some kind of symmetrical bezel top and bottom. That lines up pretty well with what the rumors have suggested so far. One thing we're still completely in the dark about is the number of devices that Samsung is going to reveal. We're expecting to see the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ at this event, but Samsung has only hinted at the one device so far. https://youtu.be/Ozng2cTF8_0 This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Kyrgyz opposition leader detained ahead of presidential campaign Posted: 26 Feb 2017 12:45 PM PST Kyrgyzstan's state security service said it detained opposition leader Omurbek Tekebayev on Sunday on charges of corruption and fraud, a move that may eliminate him as a contender for presidency in the upcoming election. Tekebayev, 58, leads the Ata Meken (Fatherland) party's parliamentary faction and is one of the most outspoken critics of President Almazbek Atambayev, whose term ends this year. The ex-Soviet Central Asian nation will hold a presidential election on Nov. 19. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

The survey from the Odoxa-Dentsu Consulting group showed Macron winning 25 percent of the first-round vote if it were held today, slightly behind far-right leader Marine Le Pen on 27 percent. In a run-off contest between the two top candidates, Macron would beat Le Pen easily 61 percent to 39 percent, the survey of 920 voters suggested. Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus hands-on: The Moto G just went premium Posted: 26 Feb 2017 09:11 AM PST Motorola's Moto G phones have been some of the most popular mid-range Android handsets we've ever seen. Year after year, Motorola kept upgrading the phones while keeping retail price surprisingly low. Multiple rumors ahead of this year's Mobile World Congress edition suggested that Lenovo, Motorola's parent company, plans to come out with a new Moto G5 Plus at the event, and the leaks were obviously accurate. The company launched not one but two distinct Moto G5 models during its special media event on Sunday, with the bold goal of offering buyers a premium smartphone experience that won't break the bank. When you look at the two handsets side by side, you won't notice the difference. The Moto G5 and G5 Plus have almost the same size and weight, and the screen size is so similar that you won't be able to tell the difference. But as I learned more about the two devices, it became clearer that, while they're both supposed to be premium Moto G handsets, it's the Moto G5 Plus that's better version of the two. In fact, Moto G fans in America won't even find the regular Moto G5 in stores this year, as that model will only be sold in international markets. Moreover, RAM and storage will also vary for both handsets, depending on which market you live in. The Moto G5 features a 5.0-inch Full HD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor, 2/3GB of RAM, 16/32GB of storage, microSD support, 13-megapixel camera with phase detection autofocus (PDAF) and an f/2.0 aperture, 5-megapixel front facing camera with wide field of view and an f/ 2.2 aperture, 2,800 mAh removable battery with 10W rapid charging support, water-repellent nano-coating, and Android 7.0 Nougat running the show. All that package will retail starting at €199 for the 2GB/32GB storage version this March in various countries around the world. If you think that's a good deal, then wait until you hear about the Moto G5 Plus. First of all, unlike other smartphone vendors, the Plus moniker does not indicate that the G5 Plus is a bigger version. As I said, you can hardly tell the two devices apart. "Plus" is indicative of a better feature set, in this case. The Moto G5 also features a Full HD display, but it's a 5.2-inch screen with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. It also has a Qualcomm chip, but it's a snappier Snapdragon 625 chip. It has various RAM and storage capacities, but you'll have 2/3/4GB of RAM and 32/64GB of storage to choose from. There's a great rear camera just like the G5, but it's a 12-megapixel shooter with dual autofocus Pixel, f/1.7 aperture, 1.4um pixel, color balancing dual LED flash. The 5-megapixel selfie camera supports 4K video recording, unlike the G5. It also has a fast-charging battery like the G5, but it's a non-removable 3,000 mAh unit that comes with a TurboPower Charger. The Moto G5 Plus is better than the Moto G5 in every way, and it's only slightly more expensive than its sibling. Pricing starts at $229 for the 2GB/32GB storage version (in America), and at €279 for the 3GB/32GB storage model (in Europe). The phone will also launch this March alongside the G5. Before you even ask, both handsets come with micro USB and 3.5mm headphone jacks, which means they'll work with all the charging cables and headphones you already have around the house. One more thing: Both handsets come with a fingerprint sensor on the front side, but the Moto G5 Plus will also support NFC-based wireless payments in all markets aside from America. The fingerprint sensor is going to play an even bigger role in your day-to-day phone interaction as it comes with brand new Moto Actions gesture support if you buy the Plus version. Called One Button Nav, the new feature turns the sensor into a tiny trackpad that can replace the default Android navigation buttons typically found in a row at the bottom of the display. That frees up even more real estate for apps, since those menu buttons won't get in the way when the feature is enabled. This is Motorola's unique way of increasing display real estate without removing the fingerprint sensor from the front side or increasing the overall size of the handset. Make no mistake, the new Moto G5 series isn't here to steal the thunder from the LG G6, Huawei P10, or the incoming Galaxy S8. It's not an iPhone killer either unless the iPhone in question is a few years old. But if you're looking for a budget-friendly phone, the Moto G5 should be at the top of your list, which is something I could have told you about any of its predecessors. This year, however, you get a Moto G device that features a metal design, a high-resolution screen, advanced cameras, fast-charging and long-lasting batteries, and brand new Android tricks. If you can try one in a store near you, definitely give the Moto G5 phones a chance next month. And definitely go for the Plus when you decide to buy one. Yes, Le Pen could win in France Posted: 26 Feb 2017 08:54 AM PST With the polls narrowing and one of her main rivals embroiled in an expenses scandal, far-right leader Marine Le Pen could feasibly become French president in May, senior politicians and commentators say. At the headquarters of her National Front (FN) party in Nanterre outside Paris, officials believe the same forces that led to the Brexit vote in Britain and Donald Trump's victory in the United States could carry Le Pen to power. "I think Madame Le Pen could be elected," former conservative prime minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin said this month. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

LG G6 hands-on: 42 days at the top Posted: 26 Feb 2017 08:05 AM PST I can't see the future, but I have been doing this long enough to know a thing or two. For example, I know a gorgeous new flagship smartphone when I see one, and there's absolutely no question that the LG G6 is a gorgeous flagship smartphone. Inside and out, the all-new G6 is an impressive feat of engineering, packing a huge 5.7-inch Quad HD+ display with an 18:9 aspect ratio into a phone that measures 148.9 x 71.9 x 7.9 mm. To put that into perspective, the G6 stuffs a display that's larger than the 5.5-inch screen in the iPhone 7 Plus into a phone with a footprint that is barely bigger than the iPhone 7, which is equipped with a 4.7-inch display. Of course, I have also been doing this long enough to know that some things are inevitable. As impressive as the LG G6 design is, and as nifty as its new features might be, this phone will be living on borrowed time from the moment it's released. At the time of this writing, neither LG nor Samsung had announced release dates for their upcoming new flagship smartphones. That said, recent leaks from trustworthy sources suggest that LG plans to release the LG G6 on Friday, March 10, and Samsung plans to release the new Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ on Friday, April 21st. When the LG G6 is released on March 10th, it will undoubtedly be the best Android smartphone the world has ever seen. Sadly, the G6 will be dethroned just 42 days later when the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ are released in late April. That gives LG exactly 42 days at the top before the phone is steamrolled by Samsung. As impressive as the LG G6 is, we already know that the phone will be no match for the Galaxy S8, or for the marketing behemoth behind it. LG unveiled its next-generation G6 flagship phone on Sunday during a press conference at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Spain. The G6 is the first flagship phone of 2017 from a top global smartphone vendor, and it raises the bar in every way. The new phone also gives us a preview of what we can expect from other top global smartphone vendors this year — namely, a big, beautiful display stuffed into a smartphone that is much smaller than the phablets of years past. In 2017, phone makers have finally managed to shrink down the bezels that surround smartphone screens so that the large displays people love can fit into phones people can actually use with one hand. The best phones in the world are phablets, after all, but it'll be nice to my phone in my jeans pocket once again. In the case of the G6, the display is a stunning 5.7-inch Quad HD+ screen that LG calls a "FullVision" display. It has an 18:9 aspect ration which is the new norm in 2017 according to rumors surrounding other flagship smartphones set to hit the market this year, and it might just be the most stunning LCD display ever used in a smartphone. The clarity is incredible, the colors are bold and vivid, and the contrast is as close to perfect as I've seen. While 18:9 might become the industry standard this year, another important piece of the G6 puzzle is anything but standard in 2017: The processor. LG knew it needed to beat Samsung to market this year, and that meant compromising in a few key areas. Chief among them is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor that powers the G6. It's a fantastic mobile processor, as we all know, but the upcoming Snapdragon 835 is better in every way. It's smaller, it's more efficient, and it's more powerful than its predecessor. Unfortunately, it wasn't available when LG began developing the G6, and the company knew that delaying the phone and launching alongside the Galaxy S8 simply was not an option. In case you're wondering, yes, the Snapdragon 835 is indeed the next-generation chipset that will power the US version of Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. On the plus side, LG worked with Qualcomm to narrow the gap a bit between the Snapdragon 821 and the upcoming new Snapdragon 835. For example, LG's G6 supports both Dolby Vision and HDR 10, and it also features next-generation electronic image stabilization and smooth zoom during 4K video recording that isn't found on any other phone with an 821 chip. The G6 features a dual 13-megapixel rear camera setup that enables 2x optical zoom just like Apple's iPhone 7 Plus. I didn't get a chance to thoroughly test it during the time I spent with the phone last week, but the camera app is stuffed with new features that I can't wait to explore when I review the phone. Other highlights from the G6's specs list include a large 3,300 mAh battery that supports Quick Charge 3.0 and wireless charging. The battery is embedded and is no longer removable like the one in last year's LG G5, but the reason for the change is sound: LG's G6 is IP68 rated for water resistance. That means the phone can survive being submerged under 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes, and it puts the G6 on par with flagship phones from Apple and Samsung. We'll have plenty more to share in our upcoming full review of the LG G6. In the meantime, pricing and a release date should be announced very soon by LG's carrier partners in the US. While nothing is official yet, you can expect the phone to be released on March 10th after a brief preorder period, and it should be priced in line with the iPhone 7 and Galaxy S7. That's right — despite its huge 5.7-inch screen, the phone should be competitive with where the smaller iPhone 7 and Galaxy S7 were at launch. Here are the full LG G6 specs as provided by LG:

Iran's Rouhani chides critics as aide says he will seek re-election Posted: 26 Feb 2017 06:51 AM PST President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday accused his hardline critics of wanting to deprive Iranians of the basic joys of life and isolate the country, as an aide said he had decided to run for a second term, state media reported. Iran will hold a presidential election on May 19, but Rouhani, a moderate who is eligible to seek a second four-year term, has stopped short of saying he would run to push ahead with reforms resisted by powerful hardliners. "Soon it's the (Iranian) New Year, so let the people have some joy," Rouhani, who has advocated greater social freedoms, said in a speech carried live on state television.
