US unemployment rate hits 16-year low in May Posted: 02 Jun 2017 11:35 AM PDT The US unemployment rate fell to a 16-year low in May but monthly job creation saw a sharp slowdown from April, the Labor Department reported Friday. The economy added just 138,000 net new jobs for the month, well below analyst expectations, while the jobless rate decreased by a tenth of a point to 4.3 percent. The mixed picture of the labor market could muddy the waters ahead of a Federal Reserve decision on interest rates later this month. California to seek its own climate change deal with China after Donald Trump ditches Paris Agreement Posted: 02 Jun 2017 11:02 AM PDT California is to seek its own "international" agreement on climate change with China, the state's governor has suggested. Jerry Brown, who previously signalled the west coast state was "ready to fight" Donald Trump over the issue, said he would discuss merging China's and California's carbon trading markets on a visit to Beijing. Carbon trading, also known as cap-and-trade, is seen as an important mechanism for driving down greenhouse gas emissions and California's market is already linked to the one in Quebec, Canada. Venezuela leader promises constitution referendum to calm crisis Posted: 02 Jun 2017 10:42 AM PDT Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro offered to hold a referendum on contested constitutional reforms in an apparent bid to calm critics in his own camp as he resists opposition efforts to remove him from office. The surprise announcement late Thursday followed two months of deadly unrest during anti-government protests and signs of division in the socialist leader's side. The opposition says his constitutional reform plan is a bid to cling to power -- and key allies such as Attorney General Luisa Ortega have broken ranks with him, arguing it is undemocratic. Pfizer defeats appeals linking Zoloft to birth defects Posted: 02 Jun 2017 10:09 AM PDT Pfizer Inc on Friday defeated an effort to revive more than 300 lawsuits alleging that its antidepressant Zoloft causes cardiac birth defects in children when taken by women during early pregnancy. A panel of the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia upheld the April 2016 dismissal of the cases by a lower court judge, who said the plaintiffs had not shown a plausible scientific link between Zoloft and the birth defects. The plaintiffs accused New York-based Pfizer of downplaying the risks to boost sales of Zoloft, which topped $3 billion annually before sales of generic versions began in 2006.
