S. Korea navy holds major live-fire drills in warning to North Posted: 05 Sep 2017 02:00 AM PDT South Korea's navy held major live-fire drills Tuesday to warn the North against any provocations at sea, it said, two days after Pyongyang's biggest nuclear test to date. The drills, conducted in the East Sea (Sea of Japan), involved the 2,500-tonne frigate Gangwon, a 1,000-tonne patrol ship and 400-tonne guided-missile vessels, among others, the Navy said in a statement. "If the enemy launches a provocation above water or under water, we will immediately hit back to bury them at sea," Captain Choi Young-chan, commander of the 13th Maritime Battle Group, said in a statement. China's Wuhan bans new shared bikes on safety concerns: Xinhua Posted: 04 Sep 2017 11:02 PM PDT The central Chinese city of Wuhan has banned the further deployment of shared bikes as it tries to deal with congestion and "chaos", the official Xinhua news agency reported late on Monday. The number of shared bikes in Wuhan's urban districts is already approaching 700,000, far exceeding the city's "carrying capacity" of 400,000, with operators such as Ofo and Mobike expanding rapidly since launching in the city at the end of last year, Xinhua said citing an official statement. Shared bikes have become ubiquitous throughout China's major cities, with users now able to access an estimated 16 million vehicles nationwide through apps downloaded on their mobile phones, according to estimates from the transport ministry. Syria army nears regime enclave besieged by IS Posted: 04 Sep 2017 05:49 PM PDT Syria's army battled the Islamic State group on the edges of Deir Ezzor Monday, seeking to break the siege of a government enclave and oust the jihadists from a key stronghold. The jihadist group has already lost more than half of its nearby bastion of Raqa to attacking US-backed forces, and the loss of Deir Ezzor city and the surrounding oil-rich province would leave it with only a handful of isolated outposts. Deir Ezzor province borders Iraq, where IS has also been expelled from former strongholds Mosul and Tal Afar. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Syrian army, allies thrust east to break siege in Deir al-Zor city Posted: 04 Sep 2017 02:50 PM PDT By Ellen Francis and Laila Bassam BEIRUT (Reuters) - With a sudden lunge through jihadist lines, the Syrian army and its allies on Monday came to within 3 km of relieving the Euphrates city of Deir al-Zor, where Islamic State has besieged 93,000 civilians and an army garrison for years. The advance on the eastern city marks another stinging setback for the once-triumphant Islamic State, fast retreating in both Iraq and Syria as its self-declared caliphate crumbles. Syrian troops were rapidly approaching the city, reaching a point 3 km (2 miles) away, state television said. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
