Embattled Merkel draws up new measures to tackle migration Posted: 30 Jun 2018 12:24 PM PDT German Chancellor Angela Merkel has drawn up a raft of measures to tighten controls on the influx of migrants, according to a document submitted to her coalition partners Saturday as she battles for political survival. Merkel has also secured deals with 14 EU member states to take back from Germany asylum-seekers already registered in those countries, coalition sources said, agreements that could placate hardline rebels in her government. The move comes after the European Union's 28 members hammered out a hard-fought deal Friday to tackle migration and avert a crisis that has threatened the very fabric of the bloc. Divers were still some way from the potential safety spot, called "Pattaya Beach" after one of Thailand's best known tourist destinations. Meantime, a police search party has entered the cave from the surface, having drilled a 50-metre long shaft from the mountainside. The toys will reportedly be donated to local children, according to employees who work at the store. Instead of opening the store one last time on Friday, employees spent the day packing up boxes and putting them on a truck for the generous person. Customers looking to get some last minute deals were greeted with locked doors, though some didn't seem to mind upon hearing the news. "Oh, that's so nice. I'm happy to hear that," Erin Sampson told CBS 17. "That's great. I'd like to know who it is," said Danyel Smith. It's unclear when or how the purchased toys will be distributed to the kids.
