Police search for motive after 49 hurt in Zimbabwe election blastBy MacDonald Dzirutwe HARARE (Reuters) - Police said on Sunday they were searching for a motive for an explosion at Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa's election rally that injured 49 people. Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, the general who led a de facto coup that forced long-time leader Robert Mugabe to resign in November, described Saturday's blast as a "terrorist act" that would not stop the July 30 presidential, parliamentary and local elections, Zimbabwe's first post-Mugabe vote. Mugabe has said he felt betrayed by Mnangagwa, his former protege, and has called his presidency illegal.

Fighting moves closer to center of Yemen's main port city

Fighting moves closer to center of Yemen's main port cityBy Mohammed Ghobari ADEN (Reuters) - Yemen's Houthis deployed additional forces in the main port city of Hodeidah on Sunday as a Saudi-led military coalition moved closer to the city center in the largest offensive of the war, raising U.N. fears of a humanitarian catastrophe. The alliance led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates launched its assault on the heavily defended Red Sea city on June 12 to try to weaken the Iran-aligned Houthi movement by cutting off a key supply line for the group which controls the capital Sanaa and most populated areas. "There is a heavy deployment of armed Houthis in the city and new check points have been set up in neighborhoods where there are supporters of the Tehama brigades," said one resident, referring to a Yemeni faction from the Red Sea coastal plain that is fighting with coalition forces.

White House accuses Democrats of exploiting toddler photo as Time magazine corrects story

Posted: 24 Jun 2018 04:10 AM PDT

White House accuses Democrats of exploiting toddler photo as Time magazine corrects storyThe White House seized on a photo of a Honduran toddler seen sobbing at the US-Mexico border, accusing Democrats of exploiting the picture. The photograph, taken by Getty Images photographer John Moore at the scene of a border detention on June 12, became a powerful image in the media coverage of the separation of families. Dozens of newspapers and magazines published the image and it helped raise $17 million in Facebook's biggest ever fundraiser. The image was widely interpreted as showing the girl crying over being parted from her mother. However, it later emerged that the girl had not been separated from her mother. For its cover this week, titled 'Welcome to America,' Time magazine had cropped the picture to show just the girl, juxtaposing it with a picture of Mr Trump, as though he were looking down at her. In a correction Time magazine later said: "The original version of this story misstated what happened to the girl in the photo after she was taken from the scene. "The girl was not carried away screaming by US Border Patrol agents. Her mother picked her up and the two were taken away together." White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said on Friday: "It's shameful that Democrats and the media exploited this photo of a little girl to push their agenda. "She was not separated from her mom. The separation here is from the facts."   Denis Valera, her father in Honduras, said his one-year-old daughter Yelena was with her mother Sandra Sanchez in a detention centre in Texas. He said his wife and daughter had left Honduras without his knowledge and made the trek to the US to seek asylum.. Honduras' deputy foreign minister, Nelly Jerez, confirmed Mr Valera's version of events. The photograph showed Ms Sanchez being patted down by a border guard at the side of a road near the Rio Grande as Yelena screamed. The caption on the photograph said the detention could lead to possible separation, not that this had occurred. Mr Moore had made clear in numerous media interviews that he did not know what had happened to the mother and daughter or whether they had been separated.

Ten days after Trump-Kim summit, hard work is yet to begin

Ten days after Trump-Kim summit, hard work is yet to beginThe landmark summit between President Donald Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un ended with a North Korean pledge of "complete denuclearization," but 10 days on no timetable for action has emerged. After flying back to Washington last week, seemingly giddy with success, the US leader tweeted, "There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea" -- a bold claim with Kim's arsenal still in place. Many observers were disappointed that the short statement of intent signed by the two leaders did not more clearly define denuclearization, fearing Kim plans to keep his hard-won deterrent.
