Farm bill failure gives Dems ammunition in House races Posted: 13 Oct 2012 12:41 PM PDT RINGSTED, Iowa (Reuters) - Democrats fighting an uphill battle to win a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives are trying to use rural angst over the failure of congressional Republicans to pass a farm bill to win some Midwestern seats in the November 6 election. The farm bill, which sets subsidies for everything from crop insurance to milk production, expired on October 1 after the Republican majority in the House could not muster enough votes to pass a new law. ... |

Shuttle Endeavour makes trip through Los Angeles Posted: 13 Oct 2012 07:13 AM PDT LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The retired space shuttle Endeavour rolled through Los Angeles at a tortoise-like crawl on Friday, squeezing through narrow streets as it headed to its new permanent home at a local museum. Endeavour nosed out of Los Angeles International Airport before dawn on Friday to begin a two-day, 12-mile (19-km) journey atop a massive wheeled transporter to the California Science Center on the edge of downtown. The shuttle, which flew from 1992 to 2011, will become a tourist attraction at the center. Endeavour was largely built in southern California and was a workhorse of the ... |
Libya police colonel targeted in assassination attempt Posted: 13 Oct 2012 05:50 AM PDT BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) - A police car exploded on Saturday during a failed assassination attempt on a police colonel in the eastern city of Benghazi, a Libyan police official said. The attack was the latest in a series of assassination attempts in Benghazi, the cradle of last year's uprising which ousted Muammar Gaddafi, and where U.S. ambassador Christopher Stevens was killed in a September 11 attack on the U.S. consulate. Unknown suspects placed a home-made bomb under Colonel Mohammed Ben Haleem's car which was parked outside his house, police spokesman Majed al-Obeidi said. ... |
Missile gets makeover on 50th anniversary of Cuban crisis Posted: 13 Oct 2012 05:33 AM PDT MIAMI (Reuters) - In October 1962, as fears of mushroom clouds and radioactive fallout gripped the United States in the midst of the Cuban missile crisis, a battery of anti-ballistic missiles near Miami stood as the nation's first line of defense against nuclear attack. Half a century later the missile base is still there, in the middle of the marshy Everglades, but the missiles are long gone. ... |

China considers Taiwan a breakaway province to be unified with the mainland eventually, and by force if necessary. Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou told Reuters that relations are at their most stable in 60 years. ... |

On the Turkish-Syrian border, Turkey scrambled two fighter jets after a Syrian military helicopter bombed the Syrian border town of Azmarin, the site of fierce fighting between rebels and government forces this week. ... |

The case of Chen Guangcheng's nephew, Chen Kegui, has renewed international focus on China's human rights and legal system. Chen has been held incommunicado by police for over five months and has been denied access to his choice of lawyers. His case is widely seen as illegitimate by Chen's family and human rights advocates. ... |

What experts worry about in the meningitis outbreak Posted: 12 Oct 2012 04:47 PM PDT CHICAGO (Reuters) - The widening outbreak of fungal meningitis that has infected 184 Americans and killed 14 people is a new phenomenon for doctors, who typically only see such infections in patients with compromised immune systems. When people do develop fungal infections, they normally get them from breathing in fungal spores, which can cause infections in the lungs of vulnerable patients, such as those who have had organ transplants. From the lungs, the infection can spread to the blood, and in rare cases to the central nervous system. ... |
