Ex-presidential nominee George McGovern 'no longer responsive' Posted: 17 Oct 2012 02:17 PM PDT Former Democratic Senator George McGovern, who lost to Richard Nixon in the 1972 presidential election, is "no longer responsive" and is surrounded by family and friends at a hospice center in South Dakota, his family said on Wednesday. McGovern, 90, was admitted to hospice in Sioux Falls "with a combination of medical conditions, due to age, that have worsened over recent months," his family said in a statement. Five people found dead in Denver bar set on fire Posted: 17 Oct 2012 12:39 PM PDT DENVER (Reuters) - Firefighters who rushed to douse an early morning fire at a Denver bar on Wednesday found the bodies of four women and a man in the charred building in what investigators described as a gruesome scene of possibly violent deaths. The fire at Fero's Bar and Grill was first spotted by a police officer who called authorities to report the blaze between 1:30 a.m. and 2 a.m., Denver police spokesman Detective John White said. "There appeared to be trauma to the bodies" that led investigators to "believe these were not natural deaths," White said. ... |

Obama suggests he would seek to revive ban on assault weapons Posted: 17 Oct 2012 01:24 AM PDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney engaged in a rare tussle over gun control on Tuesday, and Obama opened the door to pushing for a ban on assault weapons if he wins a second term. During their second election debate, both men largely danced around a gun-control question, a reflection of how they are wary of offending voters who support gun rights. However, Obama did say that he would back an assault-weapons ban like the one President Bill Clinton signed in 1994. That law expired in 2004 without being renewed by Congress. ... |
