Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson announced Clancy's appointment as interim director shortly after Secret Service Director Julia Pierson resigned on Wednesday. Political clash over U.S. history sparks Colorado school protests Posted: 02 Oct 2014 11:11 AM PDT By Daniel Wallis JEFFERSON COUNTY Colo. (Reuters) - Sitting with friends by a skate park near a Colorado high school known more for an infamous shooting than conflict over curriculum, 17-year-old Charlotte Beierle said attempts to play down the darker parts of U.S. history mystify her. The Columbine High School student was one of more than 1,000 placard-waving pupils who walked out of classrooms in the largely white, middle-class district in suburban Denver last week after one school board member proposed changing parts of a history course. ... |

Boston Herald apologizes for Obama 'watermelon' cartoon Posted: 02 Oct 2014 08:44 AM PDT BOSTON (Reuters) - The Boston Herald has apologized for an editorial cartoon about the recent White House security breaches featuring U.S. President Barack Obama that made a watermelon reference. The cartoon, which appeared on Wednesday, depicted Obama brushing his teeth while an unidentified man, presumably an intruder, sits in a bathtub behind him asking, "Have you tried the new watermelon-flavored toothpaste?" A historic U.S. racist stereotype held that black people are particularly fond of watermelons. Obama is the United States' first black president. ... |

Supreme Court takes no immediate action on gay marriage cases Posted: 02 Oct 2014 07:07 AM PDT By Lawrence Hurley WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday took no action over whether it plans to take up the question of whether states can ban gay marriage. The seven different cases pending before the court were not mentioned in a list of new cases the court agreed to hear on Thursday ahead of its new term, which starts on Monday. The move does not necessarily mean the court will decline to hear the cases during the new term. It often takes more time to consider particularly noteworthy or complicated cases before deciding whether to take them up. ... |
