US-backed alliance launches 'final' battle against IS in east SyriaAl-Tanak (Syria) (AFP) - A US-backed Kurdish-led alliance announced Tuesday it is launching the final stage of its battle to expel the Islamic State jihadist group from its desert holdouts in eastern Syria. Backed by the US-led coalition, the Syrian Democratic Forces have driven the jihadists out of large parts of the country. The SDF's Deir Ezzor Military Council on Tuesday said it would press its efforts to oust IS from remaining areas.

China said there were no economic pre-conditions. Taiwan, claimed by China as its own, has formal relations now with only 19 countries, many of them poor nations in Central America and the Pacific like Belize and Nauru.

Central American migrants from Mexico 'caravan' camp out on U.S. borderBy Delphine Schrank TIJUANA, Mexico (Reuters) - About 150 Central Americans from a "caravan" of migrants in Mexico were camped out early on Monday at the U.S. border, some trapped inside a port of entry between the two countries, as officials barred them from stepping foot on U.S. soil. Denied passage on Sunday into a pedestrian crossing between Tijuana and San Diego at the San Ysidro port of entry, many of those who had fled El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras hoping for U.S. asylum slept in a square at the Mexican entrance. Mexican officials late on Sunday allowed a first group into the walkway, about 50 women, children and transgender people, among the "most vulnerable" of the caravan, organizers said.
