Chinese fighter jets complete night landings on carrier, live-fire drills Posted: 26 May 2018 01:39 PM PDT Chinese fighter pilots have carried out night landings on the country's first aircraft carrier, the official China Daily reported on Saturday, the latest demonstration of military muscle as Beijing's pushes to modernize its armed forces. Pilots flying J-15 jets landed at night on the Liaoning, the official paper said, citing a video posted by China's navy. China has ambitious plans to overhaul its armed forces as it ramps up its presence in the disputed South China Sea and around self-ruled Taiwan, an island China considers its own. Burkina Faso minister visits China after breaking with Taiwan Posted: 26 May 2018 10:39 AM PDT Burkina Faso's foreign minister will begin a visit to China on Saturday, just days after cutting diplomatic ties with Taiwan in the first such visit in 25 years, diplomatic sources told AFP. "Minister (Alpha) Barry flew to China after taking part in Thursday's cabinet meeting and is expected to arrive in Beijing on Saturday, after stopping in Abidjan and Paris," a diplomatic source told AFP on Friday. It is the first such visit since the west African country suspended co-operation with Beijing in 1993 before switching recognition to Taiwan a year later. Venezuela's Maduro seeks oil output boost as he is sworn in Posted: 25 May 2018 02:56 PM PDT Venezuela's Nicolas Maduro was sworn in Thursday for a second term as president of the crisis-wracked Latin American country, just days after winning an election boycotted by the opposition and decried abroad. In a wide-ranging speech, Maduro promised to defeat US sanctions and take steps to correct the course of an economy in ruins, including seeking OPEC support to nearly double its oil output. Wearing a ceremonial sash in the Venezuelan colors, Maduro swore "to respect and enforce the constitution and lead all revolutionary changes" in a ceremony before the Constituent Assembly, which he set up himself last year and stacked with his supporters.
