Two US destroyers sail into Taiwan Strait: Taiwan gov't Posted: 07 Jul 2018 01:32 PM PDT Two United States warships entered the Taiwan Strait on Saturday, the Taiwanese government said, at a time of heightened tensions between Washington and Beijing. The destroyers USS Mustin and USS Benfold sailed into the narrow waterway separating Taiwan and China on Saturday morning and were expected to continue on a northeast course, Taiwan's defence ministry said in a statement. The warships' entry into the strait comes as Washington and Beijing are locked in a trade war and as tensions escalate between Beijing and Taipei. At least 49 killed, 48 missing as torrential rain pounds Japan Posted: 07 Jul 2018 08:48 AM PDT By Thomas Wilson TOKYO (Reuters) - Forty nine people have been killed and 48 are unaccounted for in western and central Japan as torrential rain pounds the area, public broadcaster NHK said on Saturday, with more than 1.6 million evacuated from their homes. Japan's Meteorological Agency retained special weather warnings for three prefectures in the main island of Honshu, down from five, and urged vigilance against landslides, rising rivers and strong winds amid what it called "historic" rains. California wildfire spreads quickly; thousands evacuated Posted: 07 Jul 2018 06:17 AM PDT (Reuters) - A fast-moving wildfire driven by strong wind and high temperatures tore through homes north of Los Angeles late on Friday, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate. The blaze, one of dozens across the region, broke out in a building in Goleta, California at about 8:30 p.m. It spread to vegetation before burning up to 20 other buildings, fire officials said. Video footage showed firefighters battling fires at several homes, as Santa Barbara County authorities said at least 2,200 residents were evacuated and 2,000 were without power, according to a Twitter posting. The confirmed death toll from the accident off the resort island of Phuket stood at 33, provincial governor Noraphat Plodthong said, but the navy said divers had spotted "quite a few bodies" in the sunken vessel, the Phoenix. When the customer, called Sam, gave his drink order in a Philadelphia Starbucks on June 27 he stuttered over his name. The barista replied "Okay, S-s-s-sam" and, retrieving his iced coffee, found the label was marked "SSSAM," according to friend and business school student Tan Lekwijit, who reported the incident on Facebook.
