Russia to hold biggest military drills since Cold War Posted: 28 Aug 2018 08:15 PM PDT Russia will flex its military muscles and hold the biggest war games since the Cold War era next month, including almost 300,000 troops and 1,000 aircraft, the defence ministry said Tuesday, leading NATO to warn of a "more assertive Russia". Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said the exercises would be similar in size to those held in September 1981 by the Soviet authorities, called Zapad-81, or West 81. "This will be something of a repeat of Zapad-81, but in some senses even bigger," Shoigu said in comments reported by Russian news agencies. South Sudan rebels to sign latest draft peace deal: Sudan Posted: 28 Aug 2018 03:10 PM PDT President Salva Kiir and the leader of the main rebel group, Riek Machar, signed up to the ceasefire and power-sharing agreement earlier this month after an initial deal in June aimed to end fighting that first broke out in 2013. Kiir's government and some small opposition groups had initialled the draft at a ceremony hosted by Khartoum outside the Sudanese capital earlier on Tuesday, but Machar's SPLM-IO and another rebel group refused to sign, saying that disputes over power sharing and a new constitution had been left out. "Intensive negotiations with Dr. Riek Machar ... has led to Dr. Riek Machar agreeing to initial the final peace agreement the day after tomorrow, on Thursday, August 30," Sudanese Foreign Minister Al-Dirdiri Mohamed said in a statement.
