UPDATE 1-Kurdish-led SDF says Turkish invasion has revived IS, urges no-fly zone Posted: 12 Oct 2019 09:47 AM PDT The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said a Turkish attack in northern Syria had revived Islamic State and called on allied states that helped fight the jihadist group to close off air space to Turkish war planes. In a televised statement, senior SDF official Redur Xelil said the SDF was continuing to cooperate with the U.S.-led coalition against Islamic State even as it must now also confront the Turkish attack on northern Syria. Turkey says Syria assault 'won't stop' as US threatens sanctions Posted: 11 Oct 2019 06:48 PM PDT Ras al-Ain (Syria) (AFP) - Battles raged Friday as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to press an assault against Kurdish forces in Syria, dismissing "threats" from other countries while the US warned Ankara of fresh sanctions. President Donald Trump, whose order to pull back US troops from the border this week effectively triggered the intervention, said Washington would now seek to broker a truce. US Defence Secretary Mark Esper "strongly encouraged" Turkey to halt its offensive as a prelude to such negotiations, warning otherwise of "serious consequences". The Latest: Los Angeles fire grows, but some containment Posted: 11 Oct 2019 03:46 PM PDT The wildfire burning on the northern edge of Los Angeles has grown to more than 11 square miles (28 square kilometers) but there is also some containment. Fire Capt. Branden Silverman says damage assessments are continuing. The California Highway Patrol says sections of two interstates and one state highway remain closed.
