Arizona student dies after rappelling fall Posted: 18 Jan 2015 12:41 PM PST (Reuters) - A 21-year-old Arizona State University student has died after falling while rappelling with a group of climbers from the school, a Maricopa County Sheriff's Office spokesman said on Sunday. Sheriff's deputies found student Katelyn Conrad unresponsive on Saturday morning after she fell about 125 feet in the Coon Bluff Recreation Area near Saguaro Lake in the Tonto National Forest, spokesman Chris Hegstrom said. Deputies began life-saving efforts but were unsuccessful, Hegstrom said. Conrad, from Gilbert, Arizona, was with a group of 20 to 25 people when the accident happened, Hegstrom said. |
California nurses reach contract agreement, cancel strike Posted: 18 Jan 2015 10:17 AM PST (Reuters) - About 18,000 nurses at Kaiser Permanente hospitals and clinics in central and northern California will receive raises of 14 percent over three years under a tentative agreement averting a potential strike, the union said on Sunday. The California Nurses Association, which is part of National Nurses United, said in a statement that the agreement would result in the hiring of more registered nurses as well as improved retirement benefits. The union, which canceled a strike planned for Wednesday and Thursday of this week, said the agreement must next be ratified by the 18,000 registered nurses and nurse practitioners covered at 86 Kaiser Permanente hospitals and clinics in California. The agreement is likely to elevate standards for registered nurses across the nation, the union said. |
Icy roads lead to fatal crashes in Pennsylvania Posted: 18 Jan 2015 09:11 AM PST (Reuters) - At least one person was killed and others injured in a multi-vehicle crash that shut down an icy highway west of Philadelphia on Sunday morning, authorities said. The icy conditions also led to numerous crashes and road closures in Maryland and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority suspended bus services in the Bronx. Light rain in the Philadelphia area caused flash-freezing on the roads and reports of multiple multi-vehicle crashes that shut parts of Interstate 76 and other highways, said Eugene Blaum, spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Blaum said that icing forced the closure of parts of I-95 and other roads in Philadelphia and that the transportation department had dispatched nearly 150 salt trucks. |

Middle class decline looms over final years of Obama presidency Posted: 18 Jan 2015 05:13 AM PST By Howard Schneider DALTON, Georgia (Reuters) - Barack Obama enters the final two years of his presidency with a blemish on his legacy that looks impossible to erase: the decline of the middle class he has promised to rescue. The revival of middle-class jobs has been one of Obama's mantras since he took office in 2009 fighting the worst economic crisis in generations. Obama's administration can take credit for stabilizing the U.S. economy, which is growing again and last year added jobs at the fastest clip since 1999. Federal Reserve survey data show families in the middle fifth of the income scale now earn less and their net worth is lower than when Obama took office. |
'Friendship Nine' to be cleared of civil rights sit-in crimes Posted: 18 Jan 2015 04:57 AM PST By Colleen Jenkins ROCK HILL, S.C. (Reuters) - Fifty-four years after nine young black men became the first U.S. civil rights protesters to serve jail time for sitting at an all-white lunch counter, surviving members of the group will return to a South Carolina courtroom this month to be exonerated of their crimes. They say the push to clear their names so long after the Jan. 31, 1961, sit-in in Rock Hill will have little effect on their lives. Author Kimberly Johnson, who published a children's book about the Friendship Nine last year, began to seek vindication for the men after reading what Martin Luther King Jr. wrote in 1963 while he was jailed for demonstrating against discrimination of African Americans. Johnson said she was struck by the similarity of the nonviolent approaches by King and those of the Friendship Nine, most of whom were attending Friendship College when they agreed to risk arrest at the McCrory's five-and-dime store's lunch counter. |
Pope attracts world-record crowd in rain-swept Philippines Posted: 18 Jan 2015 04:26 AM PST Pope Francis drew a record six million people as he celebrated mass in the rain-swept Philippines capital Sunday, delivering a powerful message for the poor to a rapturous audience in a triumphant finale to an Asian tour. Filipinos are famous for practising a passionate brand of Catholicism and they turned out in force despite the wet weather, determined to see the charismatic 78-year-old pontiff, and in a celebratory mood that defied the gloomy skies. Francis made an exhilarating entrance to a Manila bayside park for the mass aboard a "popemobile" that was styled after the nation's iconic, flamboyant and much-loved "jeepney" minibus. The Philippines is the Catholic Church's bastion in Asia, with 80 percent of the former Spanish colony followers of the faith, and the pope praised them for their reverence. |

Pope says Mass for huge Manila crowd, appeals for suffering children Posted: 18 Jan 2015 12:26 AM PST By Philip Pullella and Rosemarie Francisco MANILA (Reuters) - Pope Francis said a huge open-air Mass for a rain-drenched crowd of millions in the Philippine capital on Sunday, after appealing to the world to "learn how to cry" over the plight of poor, hungry, homeless and abused children. The crowd, estimated by city officials to be more than 3 million before the Mass started, filled Manila's Rizal Park and surrounding areas to attend the event that closes Francis's week-long trip to Asia. The 78-year-old Pope, wearing a transparent yellow poncho over his white cassock, was driven through the ecstatic crowd in a "popemobile" modified from a jeepney, the most popular mode of transport in the Philippines. He stopped often along the route to kiss children and bless religious statues on the day the Philippines celebrates the feast of the infant Jesus. |
Bill Cosby thanks Denver fans as protesters chant 'shame!' Posted: 17 Jan 2015 07:52 PM PST By Daniel Wallis DENVER (Reuters) - Bill Cosby thanked hundreds of fans who turned out for shows in Denver on Saturday as a small gathering of protesters outside the theater denounced the comedian, who has been accused of sexual assault by more than a dozen women in the past three months. The star of NBC hit 1980s family sitcom "The Cosby Show" denies the allegations, many of which are decades old and fall outside the statute of limitations for criminal or civil cases. His lawyer has called the claims "discredited" and "defamatory." Cosby has never been charged over any of the allegations. Outside the Buell Theatre in downtown Denver, about 40 protesters chanted "No more jokes!" and some pointed and shouted "Shame on you!" and "Rape supporters!" at ticket holders as they lined up to get in for the first of two shows. |

Arrest of U.S. FAA inspector prompts new security rules, training Posted: 17 Jan 2015 05:59 PM PST (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration on Saturday suspended a program that allows its inspectors to skip security checkpoints on the job after one of them was arrested with a firearm in his carry-on bag, according to officials and media reports. The arrest at New York's LaGuardia Airport on Tuesday also prompted FAA Administrator Michael P. Huerta to ramp up security training of its inspectors during the temporary suspension of the program, according to the agency's statement on Saturday. The program allowed the inspectors to bypass the checkpoints and access secure areas of the airports while performing their normal duties. The FAA said it would also require inspectors to sign an agreement stating that weapons-related infractions will result in their permanently losing the ability to bypass the checkpoints. |
