(Reuters) - A Florida man confessed to decapitating his mother with an ax on New Year's Eve after becoming upset by her request to put some boxes into the attic of their home, authorities said. Christian Jose Gomez, 23, remained in jail on Friday, charged with first-degree murder in the grisly killing of Maria Suarez-Cassagne, 48, in the Tampa-area suburb of Oldsmar. Gomez repeatedly hit his mother with an ax, then dumped her severed head in a garbage can and left her body outside the home, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said at a news conference. ... |

(Reuters) - A Texas father and son on a multi-state crime spree killed a husband and wife in North Carolina, set their home on fire, stole their truck and then shot two police officers in West Virginia, authorities said on Friday. Senate Majority Leader taken to hospital after accident at home Posted: 02 Jan 2015 07:34 AM PST WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid suffered broken ribs and facial bones in an exercising accident at his Nevada home, his office said in a statement on Friday. Reid, a Democrat, was taken to a hospital in Henderson, Nevada, for treatment after being injured when a piece of exercise equipment broke while he was using it. Garrett Gagne, 22, of Longmeadow, Massachusetts, was lying on an unlit road at about 4 a.m. when he was struck by a Chatham police car responding to an emergency call, police said in a statement. Sheriff could probe police death of Cleveland boy: report Posted: 01 Jan 2015 02:46 PM PST (Reuters) - The investigation into the shooting death of a black 12-year-old boy by a white Cleveland police officer could be taken over by an outside agency, a media report said. Cleveland city officials have been in talks to hand their investigation into the Nov. 22 shooting of Tamir Rice over to the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department, the Northeast Ohio Media Group reported on Wednesday.
