New Yemen drone strike kills four Qaeda suspects Posted: 02 Feb 2015 09:00 AM PST A drone strike killed at least four Al-Qaeda suspects in Yemen Monday, tribal sources said, the third attack in a week after Washington vowed to pursue its anti-jihadist campaign there. The unmanned aircraft, which only the United States operates in the region, targeted a car carrying "at least four" suspects in Baida province, the sources said. This was the third such strike since US President Barack Obama on January 25 vowed no let-up in Washington's campaign against jihadists in Yemen. |
Boston plans Super Bowl parade despite piles of snow Posted: 02 Feb 2015 08:44 AM PST By Tim McLaughlin BOSTON (Reuters) - Boston's Super Bowl victory parade will happen on Tuesday, despite two heavy storms in one week and big piles of snow along a route that likely will attract at least tens of thousands of throaty fans. Mayor Marty Walsh on Monday announced the parade as more than a foot (30 cm) of snow was expected to hit the city. The mayor wasn't being cocky about the hometown team, but after a blizzard hit the city last week he had to be ready for a potential victory parade. |

Deaths linked to defective GM switch expected to rise: fund official Posted: 02 Feb 2015 06:46 AM PST The number of eligible claims for deaths and injuries linked to the defective General Motors Co ignition switch that led to the recall of 2.6 million older cars should rise, an official responsible for administering the victim compensation fund said on Monday. The number of deaths deemed eligible for compensation under the program established by GM, the No. 1 U.S. automaker, stands at 51 and will "absolutely" rise from there as more of the claims are processed, fund deputy administrator Camille Biros said in an interview. The number of eligible catastrophic injuries and less serious injuries are eight and 69, respectively, she said. Biros, who works with administrator Kenneth Feinberg, said the program likely will be processing claims through the end of spring. |

Phil saw his shadow at 7:25 a.m. EST in the Western Pennsylvania borough of Punxsutawney, the self-proclaimed weather capital of the world. Legend has it that if the groundhog sees his shadow, six more weeks of winter will take place in North America. |
Obama proposes $3.99 trillion budget Posted: 02 Feb 2015 04:40 AM PST By Jeff Mason WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Monday proposed a $3.99 trillion budget for fiscal year 2016 that sets up a battle with Republicans over programs to boost the middle class that are funded by higher taxes on corporations and wealthy Americans. Obama's budget fleshes out proposals from his State of the Union address and helps highlight Democratic priorities for the last quarter of his presidency and the beginning of the 2016 presidential campaign. "Our hope is that by laying out ... a clear economic vision centered around the middle class and economic growth, that we'll be able to have a productive conversation (with Republicans) and make progress over the course of the year," an administration official said on Sunday, previewing the budget's release. Republicans have said they see room for compromise in areas such as tax reform and infrastructure, but many of Obama's programs, which were rolled out in the weeks before the budget's release, have landed with a thud. |
California’s next big political wave Posted: 02 Feb 2015 03:35 AM PST When California Sen. Barbara Boxer announced on Jan. 8 that she would be retiring after her current term ends in 2016, Golden State politicos reacted with the sort of panting excitement usually reserved for a regime change at, say, Buckingham Palace. A new generation of California Democrats has a rare chance for major office. But aside from age, how do they differ from the previous generation? This is an important question not just for California but for the entire Democratic Party — and possibly the entire country. |

Workers strike for second day at nine U.S. oil, chemical plants Posted: 01 Feb 2015 10:34 PM PST By Erwin Seba HOUSTON (Reuters) - Union workers were on strike for a second day on Monday at nine U.S. refineries and chemical plants in an attempt to force oil companies to sign a new national contract covering laborers at 63 plants. Talks broke down against a backdrop of plunging crude prices, which have fallen by half since June, prompting oil companies to cut spending. The United Steelworkers union (USW) said Royal Dutch Shell Plc, the lead industry negotiator, halted negotiations early on Sunday after the union rejected a fifth proposal from the company. Shell activated a strike contingency plan at its joint venture refinery and chemical plant in Deer Park, Texas, to keep operating normally. |

Deadlocked at 14-14 at the half, the Seahawks broke the deadlock with Steven Hauschka booting a 27-yard field goal to give Seattle their first lead of the game. The field goal was set up by another big 45-yard catch by Chris Matthews, who in the first half recorded his first career reception and first career touchdown. With New England driving to answer the score, Tom Brady was intercepted for the second time, Bobby Wagner giving Seattle the ball at midfield. |

Man arrested after climbing bike rack outside White House Posted: 01 Feb 2015 05:11 PM PST A man who climbed a bicycle rack outside the White House fence on Sunday has been charged with unlawful entry, the U.S. Secret Service said. Agency spokesman Brian Leary said the suspect did not make it over the bike rack, which is set back from the presidential residence's fence on Pennsylvania Avenue. The Secret Service, which protects the president and other U.S. leaders, has come under scrutiny after a series of security lapses. In September, an intruder jumped the White House fence and got into the building before being apprehended. |
Major snowstorm hits Chicago, heads toward New England Posted: 01 Feb 2015 04:39 PM PST By Kevin Murphy KANSAS CITY (Reuters) - A major winter storm swept through parts of the Midwest on Sunday, dumping more than a foot (30 cm) of snow in the Chicago area before tracking toward New England, a region still reeling from a powerful blizzard that struck only days ago. The fresh snowfall and strong winds complicated the plans of millions of Americans in the Midwest planning to travel to Super Bowl parties on Sunday evening. In Chicago's two major airports, about 1,400 flights were canceled. "Now we are worried about the winds, with blizzard warnings and near white-out conditions," said Amy Seeley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Chicago. |
