Hearing for accused 9/11 plotters halted after infiltration charge Posted: 09 Feb 2015 12:50 PM PST By Tom Ramstack FORT MEADE, Md. (Reuters) - A U.S. military judge on Monday halted a pre-trial hearing for Guantanamo Bay inmates accused of plotting the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks after one of the accused said his interpreter had worked at a secret CIA prison. The allegation by Ramzi Binalshibh, a 42-year-old Yemeni, adds to contentions by the defense that the U.S. government is attempting to infiltrate its team. The Arabic interpreter is part of the defense team for the five detainees charged in the 2001 attacks that killed almost 3,000 people in the United States. Binalshibh said he recognized him from his time in a secret Central Intelligence Agency "black site." "I have some problem to get the translations, complete translations, so I have my interpreter, Mr. Louay Al-Nazer. |
Posted: 09 Feb 2015 09:57 AM PST (Reuters) - Netflix Inc launched its movie and TV streaming service in Cuba on Monday, joining the list of U.S. companies looking to take advantage of thawing diplomatic relations between the United States and the communist-ruled island country. The United States announced new rules on Jan. 15 that will significantly ease sanctions on Cuba, opening up the island to expanded U.S. travel, trade and financial activities. Netflix said the service, starting at $7.99 per month, would be available to customers with international payment cards. Cuba, with a population of about 11 million, has one of the lowest internet penetration rates in the world - barely 5 percent. |
Puerto Rico set for tougher debt struggle after court ruling Posted: 09 Feb 2015 09:26 AM PST By Megan Davies and Nick Brown NEW YORK (Reuters) - Hopes of an orderly resolution to Puerto Rico's debt crisis suffered a heavy blow after a court voided the island's restructuring law, raising fears it may be heading for a longer, messier debt overhaul. Late on Friday a U.S. federal judge ruled that the U.S. commonwealth's so-called Recovery Act, which made some of Puerto Rico's agencies eligible for court-supervised debt restructuring, violated the U.S. constitution by allowing a state government to modify municipal debt. "This decision will ultimately result in a resolution being dragged out over a longer period of time, having the administrative costs incurred eat into the ultimate recovery for the bondholders," said Tom Metzold, a senior portfolio advisor at Eaton Vance, which holds various insured Puerto Rico bonds. Puerto Rico is expected to appeal the ruling, kicking off lengthy litigation with a hard to predict outcome and possibly delaying for months the matter's final resolution. |

District of Columbia holds hearing on marijuana sales Posted: 09 Feb 2015 03:14 AM PST By Ian Simpson WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The legal sale of marijuana in the U.S. capital takes a step forward on Monday as District of Columbia city council members weigh a bill legalizing pot and regulating its sale. The hearing comes as Congress faces an end-of-the-month deadline to quash a ballot initiative overwhelmingly approved by Washington voters legalizing marijuana. The finance, business and judiciary committees will hear testimony on a bill that would let the city join the states of Washington and Colorado in allowing the sale of marijuana for recreational use by adults. The Marijuana Legalization and Regulation Act of 2015 would legalize the possession and sale of small amounts of marijuana for adults and permit cultivation of up to six plants. |
