Five charged in ID theft ring that bought Apple gift cards Posted: 05 Feb 2015 10:00 AM PST By Jonathan Stempel NEW YORK (Reuters) - Five people accused of running an identity theft ring in the New York City area have been charged in a 394-count indictment with stealing personal information from hundreds of dental patients to buy Apple gift cards. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance on Thursday said the ring bought $700,000 worth of gift cards after fraudulently obtaining "instant credit" that Apple had offered online in conjunction with Barclays Plc's Barclaycard, and then used the cards to buy Apple products. The alleged ringleader was Devin Bazile, a former Apple sales associate. Prosecutors said he recruited Apple store employees to misuse names, addresses, birth dates and Social Security numbers that were stolen by defendant Annie Vuong from more than 250 patients at a Manhattan dental office, where she worked as a receptionist. |

Florida governor embroiled in scandal at start of second term Posted: 05 Feb 2015 09:11 AM PST By Bill Cotterell TAMPA, Fla. (Reuters) - Republican Governor Rick Scott, off to a rocky start in his second term in office, faced an extraordinary meeting on Thursday with Florida's Cabinet in which he admitted botching the ouster of the state's top police administrator. Since his narrow victory over former Governor Charlie Crist in November, Scott has run into a series of controversies. In the past month, Scott was rebuked by the state Republican Party, which rejected his choice to lead the party and instead elected state Representative Blaise Ingoglia in an unheard-of snub for a newly re-elected governor. Last week, former state prisons director Michael Crews, who had been ousted by Scott, accused the governor of neglecting staff shortages and crumbling facilities in the Department of Corrections. |

People are also uneasy about potential invasions of privacy by drones carrying cameras or other devices. Forty-two percent went as far as to oppose private ownership of drones, suggesting they prefer restricting them to officials or experts trained in safe operation. |

Texas jury selection to start for man charged with killing sniper Kyle Posted: 05 Feb 2015 04:18 AM PST By Marice Richter DALLAS (Reuters) - The first steps in jury selection are set to begin on Thursday in a Texas court for the man charged with murdering Chris Kyle, the former Navy SEAL whose best-selling autobiography was turned into the hit movie "American Sniper." About 800 residents of largely rural Erath County have been called as potential jurors in the trial of Eddie Ray Routh, 27, charged with murdering Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield at a shooting range about 70 miles (112 km) southwest of Fort Worth on Feb. 2, 2013. Jury selection starts on Monday and opening arguments are planned for Feb. 11. Routh was arrested that day and has been jailed in Erath County on $3 million bond ever since. His court-appointed attorney, Warren St. John, said he will try to show that Routh was insane at the time of the incident, and therefore not guilty of murder. |

California lawmakers seek to end 'personal belief' vaccine exemptions Posted: 04 Feb 2015 04:35 PM PST By Dan Whitcomb and Michael Fleeman LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Responding to an outbreak of measles that has infected more than 100 people, two California lawmakers said on Wednesday they would introduce legislation to end the right of parents in the state to exempt their children from school vaccinations based on personal beliefs. California public health officials say 92 people have been diagnosed with measles in the state, many of them linked to an outbreak that they believe began when an infected person from outside the country visited Disneyland in late December. We need to take steps to keep our schools safe and our students healthy," state Senator Ben Allen said in a written statement announcing the legislation he is co-sponsoring with fellow Democrat Richard Pan. The measure would make California the 33rd state to bar parents from opting out of vaccinations based on personal beliefs. |
