Pat McCrory continues to defend the controversial "bathroom bill" he signed into law last month – rousing anger and boycotts by LGBT activists. North Korea sentences Korean American to 10 years hard labor Posted: 29 Apr 2016 02:45 AM PDT By Jack Kim SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea's Supreme Court on Friday sentenced a Korean American man to 10 years of hard labor for subversion, North Korean media reported, in the latest conviction of a foreigner for crimes against the isolated state. Kim Dong Chul, 62, was arrested in North Korea in October and had admitted to committing "unpardonable espionage" including stealing military secrets, the North's official KCNA news agency reported earlier. North Korea, which has been criticized over its human rights record for years, has used detained Americans in the past to extract high-profile visits from the United States, with which it has no formal diplomatic relations. |
About 20 demonstrators arrested outside of Trump rally in California Posted: 29 Apr 2016 01:50 AM PDT By Brendan O'Brien (Reuters) - Some 20 demonstrators were arrested on Thursday outside a Donald Trump campaign rally in southern California, where the Republican presidential front-runner vowed to his supporters to get tough on illegal immigration if elected. Demonstrators smashed the window of a police squad car, marched in protest and blocked traffic as police in riot gear tried to disperse the crowd outside of the county fair grounds in Costa Mesa, California, according to local media and the Twitter account of the Orange County Sheriff's Department. The department said on its Twitter account that about 20 arrests were made and that no major injuries were reported. |

Graffiti at Utah's Arches National Park may be irreparable Posted: 28 Apr 2016 07:17 PM PDT (Reuters) - Graffiti etched into one of the popular red rock arches in Utah's Arches National Park may be too deep to be repaired, the park's superintendent said on Thursday. The site of the graffiti is near a hiking trail to one of the park's main attractions, Delicate Arch, a 64-feet high sandstone structure that has been known to draw hundreds of visitors at a time. Defacing a national park can lead to a sentence of six months in prison and a $500 fine, according to the website for the U.S. Department of Justice. |

7.0-magnitude quake hits Vanuatu, tsunami warning issued: USGS Posted: 28 Apr 2016 02:03 PM PDT A 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit the Pacific nation of Vanuatu early Friday, the United States Geological Survey said, with a tsunami warning issued. The quake, which occurred at a depth of 35 kilometres (21 miles) was originally measured at 7.3 magnitude by the National Tsunami Warning Center (NTWC). "Hazardous tsunami waves from this earthquake are possible within 300 km of the epicentre along the coast of Vanuatu," the NTWC said.
