In several television interviews, Priebus, who chairs the Republican National Committee, said candidates sometimes make such statements in hopes of gaining leverage over the party, but that it would not work. "Those kinds of comments, I think, have consequences," Priebus said on ABC's "This Week." "And so when you make those kinds of comments and you want people to fall in line for you, it makes it more difficult.      "... And certainly, you know, if you were running for president of the Kiwanis Club or the Boy Scouts and you said you don't know if you like the Kiwanis or the Boy Scouts, I think that makes your challenge even greater to ultimately win those kinds of posts," he said.

The locomotive struck a vehicle on the tracks and those killed were not passengers, he told reporters. Amtrak has said southbound Train 89 had hit a backhoe. Amtrack has suspended rail services between New York and PhiladelphiaTwo people were reportedly killed in a train derailment near Philadelphia that forced a halt to rail services along a stretch of the northeast of the United States on Sunday. US railway service Amtrak said in a statement that the train, the Palmetto, was en route from New York to Savannah, Georgia, when it struck a backhoe on the tracks south of Philadelphia. "Northeast Corridor service between New York and Philadelphia is suspended," read an Amtrak statement, which said some passengers were injured.

Australia has led the search for the plane, which went missing in March 2014 with 239 people on board on a flight from the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, to Beijing, and Transport Minister Darren Chester said the debris, found last week, was an "item of interest". "The Malaysian government is working with officials from Mauritius to seek to take custody of the debris and arrange for its examination," Chester said in a statement.
