Death toll from US drone strike in Pakistan rises to 26: officials Posted: 17 Oct 2017 04:18 AM PDT The death toll from a US drone attack on a compound used by the Taliban-allied Haqqani network has risen to 26, officials said Tuesday, less than a week after a US-Canadian family held captive by the militants was rescued. The barrage on Monday targeted a meeting of Haqqani fighters in Pakistan's remote tribal Kurram district along the Afghan border in the deadliest attack on the group this year. "First drone strike killed five fighters from Haqqani network and minutes apart a second drone then fired two more missiles after militants arrived to retrieve dead bodies from the rubble," a senior government official in Kurram told AFP Tuesday. Who are the Haqqanis, Afghanistan's most feared insurgents? Posted: 17 Oct 2017 12:31 AM PDT The rescue of an abducted US-Canadian family in Pakistan last week has spotlighted their captors the Haqqani network, former CIA assets now considered one of the most dangerous factions fighting US-led NATO forces in Afghanistan. Led by Sirajuddin Haqqani, who doubles as the Afghan Taliban's deputy leader, the extremist group has been blamed for spectacular attacks across Afghanistan since after the US invasion. Long suspected of links to Pakistan's shadowy military establishment, the network was described by US Admiral Mike Mullen in 2011 as a "veritable arm" of Pakistani intelligence. The #MeToo hashtag was used in an enormous number of tweets Posted: 16 Oct 2017 09:53 PM PDT Following a week of more devastating and disturbing news about film producer Harvey Weinstein, Hollywood actor Alyssa Milano took to social media to ask women to share their own personal experiences of sexual harassment and sexual assault. In a message posted Sunday, she asked Twitter users to reply "me too" to her tweet if they had been sexually harassed or assaulted in order to "give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem." They responded in droves and the resulting hashtag #MeToo swept round the internet as a huge viral moment. SEE ALSO: Women endure a lifetime of sexual harassment even before they enter the workplace Milano's tweet was retweeted more than 17,000 times in 24 hours and on Sunday alone the #MeToo hashtag had been used 109,451 times, according to data from social analytics company Crimson Hexagon. That's a huge number, especially when compared to other feminist hashtags, such as #YesAllWomen and #EverydaySexism, that have resurfaced over the course of 2017. Image: Crimson hexagon#YesAllWomen exploded onto Twitter itself in the wake of the Elliot Rodger shooting that targeted women in 2014, and was used on 61,500 tweets on May 25 that year. It made a resurgence in January in response to the molestation of women in India during New Year's Eve celebrations. Within the two days following the groping incident, the hashtag had been used almost 6,000 times, according to Crimson Hexagon. Users tweeted out #YesAllWomen over 10,000 times in the month of January. The official national poster of #IWillGoOut is up! The Twitter account Everyday Sexism acts as a curator of these stories, in order to "show how bad the problem is."#EverdaySexism has been widely used by Twitter users throughout the year, especially in August when it was tweeted out more than 9,000 times, according to Crimson Hexagon. This instantaneous surge shows a massive success on behalf of Milano and other women to draw attention to the injustices that they have faced. #MeToo tweets by the Women's March, NARAL, and others have been retweeted thousands of times. To all the women sharing stories of sexual assault and sexual harassment, thank you for your bravery to speak up. You are not alone. #MeToo — Women's March (@womensmarch) October 15, 2017 It's not your clothing. It's not your feminism. It's not your education. It's your assailant. #MeToo — quinn cummings (@quinncy) October 15, 2017 To everyone sharing their stories of sexual assault: thank you for your bravery. We see you. We believe you. We stand with you. #MeToo — NARAL (@NARAL) October 16, 2017 If you aren't okay w posting #MeToo, know this:1. I believe you.2. You don't have to speak up to be brave. Living in the after is brave. — Bindas Ladki (@bindasladki) October 16, 2017 There are literally 4 tweets per second of women posting the #metoo, indicating that they were too a victim of sexual assault. This really shows the breadth of just how serious Sexual Assault is, not only in America, but everywhere in the world. I feel disgusted and sad. — Ed Krassenstein (@EdKrassen) October 15, 2017 Per data collected by Crimson Hexagon, tweets using #MeToo primarily focus on assault and harassment, while #EverydaySexism mostly relates to the treatment of women in the workplace, with "bullying" and "management" as two of the top terms used with the hashtag. #YesAllWomen is often used in association with a multitude of other hashtags, including #equality, #humanrights, #blacklivesmater, and #intersectionalfeminism. #MeToo Word CloudImage: CRIMSON HEXAGON#MeToo has brought female voices back to Twitter in full force after last week's #WomenBoycottTwitter movement in response to actor Rose McGowan's temporary suspension from the site. Tesla reportedly shipped Powerpacks to Puerto Rico Posted: 16 Oct 2017 09:08 PM PDT Elon Musk tweeted last week that Tesla would shift its attentions to help with the aid and recovery efforts in Puerto Rico following the devastation of Hurricane Maria. Now, it appears that the company is making good on his word: Tesla has reportedly begun to ship its Powerpack batteries, which can be used to store large amounts of energy generated by the sun and other means, to the island. These are Tesla's massive batteries meant for commercial and utility use, as opposed to the smaller Powerwall packs meant for the home. After Musk expressed his willingness to get involved, he and Puerto Rico's governor Ricardo Rossello exchanged tweets about Tesla's role on the island, and later spoke in private about the issue. Tesla VP of global infrastructure operations Cal Lankton then met with Rossello, according to Electrek, presumably to discuss a strategy at greater length. The Powerpacks could be the next step in Tesla's recovery efforts. Tesla starts shipping Powerpacks to Puerto Rico https://t.co/kCVwDp03n9 pic.twitter.com/f1ujOLsgnP — Electrek.Co (@ElectrekCo) October 15, 2017 The 3,575-pound Powerpacks can store up to 210 kWh of power, and have been used in Tesla's projects on the Hawaiian island of Kauai and American Samoa's Ta'u to create sustainable power grids. The units could conceivably be pressed into service in Puerto Rico to help rebuild the grid using what power can be produced, but it's not exactly clear what they're meant for yet. If the image is the real deal, the Powerpacks expand on Telsa's contribution of "hundreds" of smaller Powerwall units sent to Puerto Rico in the immediate aftermath of the storm. The company also provided certified employees to help install the batteries, and Musk pledged that even more qualified workers would be sent from the mainland to train local installers and combat opportunistic price gougers on the island. Tesla representatives didn't immediately respond to our questions about the Powerpacks and the company's role in Puerto Rico's recovery, and the company has stayed largely silent about the efforts outside of Musk's tweets. At press time, just 13.7 percent of Puerto Rico has power. Rossello set an "aggressive" goal to restore power to 95 percent of the grid by Dec. 15 of this year, and maybe Tesla's renewable energy tech will be part of those efforts — but the company shouldn't be seen as the island's one and only savior. Building a brand-new energy grid based on Tesla's tech would take far longer than a few months and would require a large number of Powerpacks — the Kauai project, which is on a much smaller scale, depends on a network of more than 270 units.
