Man has new perspective on life after surviving mass shooting in Las Vegas Posted: 06 Oct 2017 05:21 AM PDT Ben Daish, a Chicago native, evaded and survived the barrage of bullets streaming down from shooter Stephen Paddock's 32nd floor Mandalay Bay Hotel room on Sunday evening in Las Vegas -- and has since garnered a new appreciation for life. "People started hitting the ground, one woman said 'I'm hit' when I saw the bullet in her leg," Daish told KTVI. Being overweight or obese can cause damaging changes to the heart Posted: 05 Oct 2017 10:21 PM PDT A new UK study has found that being overweight or obese can change the structure of the heart, which could lead to heart disease and failure. Carried out by Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), the teamed used data from 4,561 people to show the direct damage that can happen to the heart's weight and size from carrying extra weight. The team used cardiac magnetic resonance imaging to study the structure and function of the hearts of the participants, and looked at the effects of modifiable risk factors, including blood pressure, smoking status, body mass index (BMI), exercise, cholesterol, alcohol intake and diabetes, on the four chambers of the heart. Hospitals, schools and people fleeing violence have been "targeted by direct air strikes" that may amount to war crimes, the United Nations said, without apportioning blame. Congressional Republicans eye 'bump stocks' after Las Vegas massacre Posted: 05 Oct 2017 08:39 PM PDT Republican lawmakers on Thursday said they would look into "bump stock" gun accessories after a retiree used rifles equipped with them to rain gunfire onto a Las Vegas concert, killing 58 people in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. The influential National Rifle Association, which has opposed efforts to pass federal gun legislation following past mass shootings, said it would not oppose the move. It said the devices that allow semi-automatic rifles to behave as fully automatic weapons should be subject to additional regulations.
