Republican tax plan a blow to Democratic states, officials say Posted: 04 Nov 2017 06:45 AM PDT (This version of the Nov. 2 story corrects paragraph 8 to say that Trump lost Nevada in 2016, instead of that he won Nevada) By Laila Kearney and Karen Pierog NEW YORK/CHICAGO (Reuters) - Democratic-leaning states are set to bankroll a big chunk of the tax cuts unveiled in a Republican tax plan on Thursday, as the plan slashes deductions used the most by residents of states that voted against Donald Trump in the 2016 elections. The bill, introduced by the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Ways and Means on Thursday, took aim at state and local tax deductions as one part of its plan to pay for reductions in taxes elsewhere. Syria declares victory over Islamic State in Deir al-Zor Posted: 04 Nov 2017 03:59 AM PDT The Syrian government declared victory over Islamic State in the eastern city of Deir al-Zor on Friday, a big blow to the jihadists as their last stronghold in Syria crumbles. Deir al-Zor, on the west bank of the Euphrates River, is the largest and most important city in eastern Syria, and is the center of the country's oil production. "The armed forces, in cooperation with allied forces, liberated the city of Deir al-Zor completely from the clutches of the Daesh terrorist organization," the military source said, using an Arabic acronym for Islamic State. Russia accuses US of blocking humanitarian aid in Syria Posted: 03 Nov 2017 07:51 PM PDT Russia on Friday accused the United States of committing a "war crime" in Syria, saying its army had denied Syrian refugees access to humanitarian aid. "The most severe humanitarian situation remains in the Al-Tanf region," the Russian defence ministry's Syria reconciliation centre said, referring to a garrison where US and other foreign troops train anti-Islamic State group fighters. Tens of thousands of Syrian refugees from the Al-Rukban refugee camp on the Jordanian border are deprived of humanitarian aid because of the United States, which "illegally placed their military base there and forbids approach within 55 kilometres (35 miles) under the threat of death," the centre said.
