Fierce winds to intensify as California wildfire grows Posted: 14 Dec 2017 09:00 AM PST By Dan Whitcomb LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - California firefighting crews may face strong winds on Thursday that could feed a volatile wildfire which has grown into one of the biggest in state history. The so-called Thomas Fire overnight grew to the fourth-largest blaze of its kind on record, at 242,500 acres (98,140 hectares) burned, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) said in a statement on Thursday morning. The fire grew larger than the Zaca Fire of 2007, which, like the Thomas Fire, struck Santa Barbara County. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

X-32: The Fighter Plane That Almost Replaced the F-35 Posted: 14 Dec 2017 04:59 AM PST Built to the same specifications, the X-32 and the F-35 had relatively similar performance parameters. Deciding to compete on cost, Boeing designed the X-32 around a single-piece delta wing that would fit all three variants. The X-32 lacked the shaft-driven turbofan lift of the F-35, instead using the same thrust vectoring system as the AV-8 Harrier. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Alibaba, JD.com Can't Lose in China Posted: 14 Dec 2017 03:15 AM PST In 2017, Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE: WMT) has proven that there's plenty of room for two e-commerce giants to thrive in the U.S. market. According to Stifel analyst Scott Devitt, there's no need for U.S. investors to pick between Alibaba Group Holding Ltd ( BABA) and JD.com Inc ( JD) in China. While Alibaba and JD continue to compete with each other for market share, both will likely deliver huge growth numbers in the years ahead. Dutch customizer reveals Tesla Model S wagon Posted: 14 Dec 2017 01:13 AM PST Niels van Roij is a London-based Dutch car designer known for projects such as the Future London Taxi, a TVR Artemis concept around eight years ago, and most often for taking luxury cars and turning them into limousines. It was revealed a couple of months ago that Roij was working on something that looked a lot like a Tesla Model S hearse, but new renderings of his Tesla Model S 'shooting brake' project have just been released and are getting people excited. This latest design for a Model S conversion sees a new sculpted rear end with a bold stance added to the original Tesla profile, and there's also a longer roof and a good deal of chrome around the side windows that van Roij claims adds visual length and "reduces the extra optical mass" of an estate car. Firefighters defend homes as huge California wildfire rages on Posted: 13 Dec 2017 10:54 PM PST By Dan Whitcomb LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Firefighters grappling with a wildfire that has burned out of control for 10 days on California's scenic coastline, destroying more than 700 homes, sought on Wednesday to defend homes from flames whipped by resurgent Santa Ana winds. The so-called Thomas Fire, already the state's fifth-largest wildland blaze on record, remained a threat to the communities of Santa Barbara, Carpinteria, Summerland and Montecito as darkness fell and winds picked up, fire officials said. "Very high fuel loading, critically low fuel moistures, above average temperatures and single-digit relative humidities will continue to support fire growth on the west, east and north sides of the Thomas incident," the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said in a statement.
