House, Senate Republicans face challenge over corporate AMT tax Posted: 05 Dec 2017 08:00 AM PST By David Morgan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Republicans in Congress are grappling with a thorny question about corporate taxes as they work to reconcile competing tax bills from the Senate and House of Representatives into a unified measure that they hope President Donald Trump will sign into law before the end of the year. The Senate bill that squeaked through on a 51-49 vote last week jettisoned a long-held Republican goal of repealing the corporate alternative minimum tax (AMT) to help pay for last-minute deals that secured the Republican votes for passage. Exiled son of slain Yemen ex-leader calls for revenge: Saudi-owned TV Posted: 05 Dec 2017 06:08 AM PST ADEN/DUBAI (Reuters) - The son of Yemen's ex-president Ali Abdullah Saleh has called for revenge against the armed Houthi movement that killed the veteran leader after he switched sides in the civil war, a Saudi-owned TV station reported on Tuesday. The intervention by the exiled Ahmed Ali Saleh, if confirmed, could shift the balance of power yet again after a dramatic week that saw the elder Saleh abandon his Houthi allies, who responded by killing him and routing his supporters from the capital Sanaa in street battles. Yemen's war, pitting the Iran-allied Houthis who control Sanaa against a Saudi-led military alliance backing a government based in the south, has led to what the United Nations calls the world's worst humanitarian crisis. Ex-president Saleh dead after switching sides in Yemen's civil war Posted: 05 Dec 2017 04:36 AM PST SANAA/DUBAI (Reuters) - Veteran former president Ali Abdullah Saleh was killed in a roadside attack on Monday after switching sides in Yemen's civil war, abandoning his Iran-aligned Houthi allies in favour of a Saudi-led coalition, foes and supporters said. Analysts said Saleh's death would be a huge moral boost for the Houthis and a serious blow to the Saudi-led coalition that intervened in the conflict to try to restore the internationally recognised government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi. Any hope within the coalition that Saleh could have been bought off to help turn the tables against the Houthis after a protracted stalemate, in which a Saudi-led blockade and internal fighting have exposed millions to hunger and an epidemic, has been dashed. French president supposedly urges Trump not to act on Jerusalem. Trump heard something different. Posted: 04 Dec 2017 06:38 PM PST French President Emmanuel Macron strongly warned President Trump on Monday not to formally recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, the Elysée Palace said in a summary of the phone call between the two leaders — or maybe he didn't, if you go by the administration's version of the same conversation.
