Trump's Quote-Unquote 'Good Week' Was Mostly Good For China Posted: 12 Mar 2018 09:03 AM PDT To his most ardent supporters, Donald Trump is a kind of genius whose intuition takes him into policy realms where lesser leaders fear to tread. Exhibits A and B, which dominated the news last week, were his declaration of tariffs on aluminum and steel ― to the horror of every orthodox economist, and the joy of his base ― and his even more abrupt decision to accept the invitation of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for a face-to-face meeting. Going back to the Clinton administration, the North Koreans have repeatedly tried to pull the United States into a process that would trade some kind of limits on their nuclear program for security guarantees and the lifting of economic sanctions. Four 'terrorists' killed in attack on Iran military checkpoint Posted: 12 Mar 2018 08:12 AM PDT Four "terrorists" were killed after infiltrating Iran and attacking a military checkpoint in a southeastern border area, officials said on Monday. The attack took place on Sunday near the city of Saravan, about 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the Pakistani border, in the province of Sistan-Baluchistan, the Islamic Republic's elite Revolutionary Guards said in a statement. Two members of the Basiji paramilitary force affiliated with the Guards were wounded in the fight, during which one of the attackers was killed after detonating an explosive vest. Betsy DeVos Says She's 'Misunderstood,' Then Struggles To Explain Her Own Policies Posted: 12 Mar 2018 01:35 AM PDT Education Secretary Betsy DeVos had one of the most contentious confirmation hearings of the Trump administration, with two Republicans voting against her nomination. DeVos claimed that when kids opt to go to private or charter schools, public schools also improve. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Rise of violent Buddhist rhetoric in Asia defies stereotypes Posted: 11 Mar 2018 11:52 PM PDT Buddhism may be touted in the West as an inherently peaceful philosophy, but a surge in violent rhetoric from small but increasingly influential groups of hardline monks in parts of Asia is upending the religion's tolerant image. Buddhist mobs in Sri Lanka last week led anti-Muslim riots that left at least three dead and more than 200 Muslim-owned establishments in ruins, just the latest bout of communal violence there stoked by Buddhist nationalists. In Myanmar, ultra-nationalist monks led by firebrand preacher Wirathu have poured vitriol on the country's small Muslim population, cheering a military crackdown forcing nearly 700,000 Rohingya into Bangladesh. Caitlyn Jenner: Trump's Administration Has Set Trans People 'Back 20 Years' Posted: 11 Mar 2018 05:36 PM PDT Over a year after she publicly supported Donald Trump's candidacy, Caitlyn Jenner continues to distance herself from the increasingly unpopular president, saying on Thursday that his administration has been the worst ever for trans people. "As far as trans issues, this administration has been the worst ever," she told Newsweek at the Champions of Jewish Values International Awards Gala in New York on March 9. The former Olympian has flip-flopped somewhat on Trump before. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
