Pakistan elects first female Dalit senator Posted: 04 Mar 2018 07:05 AM PST Pakistan elected its first female senator from the lowest Dalit caste in weekend polls which also saw the ruling party strengthen its hand ahead of a general election in the Muslim-majority country. The surprise victory of opposition candidate Krishna Kumari Kohli in the Senate election stirred a wave of optimism on social media, as Pakistanis celebrated the rare success for a woman from a marginalised community at the bottom of the Hindu caste hierarchy. "I feel proud, I am thankful to Pakistan People's Party that they nominated me," Kohli told AFP Sunday. This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
A Climate Change Litmus Test For Democrats Posted: 04 Mar 2018 06:49 AM PST In April 2016, at a campaign stop on the campus of SUNY Purchase, just north of New York City, I filmed a short video of Hillary Clinton. The video quickly went viral, partly because of the outsized response from a famously tight-lipped politician, partly because it played so well into the Democratic primary narrative that pitted Clinton, buddy-buddy with Wall Street, against the people-powered challenge of Sen. Bernie Sanders. The furor that the video generated sprang from fissures in the Democratic Party that perfunctory resistance to President Donald Trump has only papered over. Roy Moore Is Now Asking For Money On Facebook To Defend Himself Posted: 04 Mar 2018 03:04 AM PST Former Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore has asked supporters for financial assistance to defend against a defamation lawsuit brought by an Alabama woman who accused him of sexually abusing her when she was 14 years old. In a Facebook post this week, Moore said his "resources have been depleted" and he has "struggled to make ends meet" due to legal fees and expenses. "I now face another vicious attack from lawyers in Washington D. C. and San Francisco who have hired one of the biggest firms in Birmingham Alabama to bring another legal action against me and ensure that I never fight again," he wrote in the lengthy screed. Bruising Qualcomm-Broadcom battle heads for showdown Posted: 03 Mar 2018 10:38 PM PST With a potential for the biggest-ever deal in the tech sector at stake, Qualcomm shareholders will have their say on a hostile bid for the US mobile chip giant by Singapore-based rival Broadcom. Qualcomm shareholders at an annual gathering Tuesday will get to vote whether to replace six of the California company's 11 board members with candidates backed by Broadcom, essentially endorsing the deal estimated to be worth $117 billion. Qualcomm's board on Thursday sent a letter to shareholders urging them to re-elect its current members, making a statement against Broadcom's offer. Fractured Ethiopia parliament endorses emergency decree Posted: 03 Mar 2018 03:14 PM PST Ethiopia's parliament approved a nationwide state of emergency on Friday despite unusual opposition from some lawmakers, in the latest sign of fractures within the all-powerful ruling coalition. The council of ministers made the emergency declaration last month, one day after Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn's surprise resignation amid a growing political crisis and divisions in the ruling party. The six-month decree, which required approval from two-thirds of lawmakers, has been condemned by several of Ethiopia's allies including the United States and the European Union.
