Protesters again disrupt U.S. Supreme Court proceedings Posted: 01 Apr 2015 07:33 AM PDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Protesters disrupted U.S. Supreme Court proceedings for the third time in just over a year on Wednesday, with several people shouting out before the nine justices heard oral arguments in a bankruptcy case. The protesters appeared to be criticizing the court's 2010 campaign finance ruling that lifted limits on corporate spending in federal elections. Man accusing police in Detroit suburb of brutality due in court Posted: 01 Apr 2015 04:23 AM PDT By Serena Maria Daniels DETROIT (Reuters) - A man who was dragged from his car, struck several times in the head and Tasered by suburban Detroit police during an arrest recorded on squad car video is set to appear Wednesday in court on a drug charge. Floyd Dent, 57, contends police planted the cocaine after the traffic stop on Jan. 28 in Inkster, Michigan, about 14 miles west of downtown Detroit. Gregory Rohl, Dent's attorney, has said his client, who is black, was targeted because of his race. Dent, who has worked for Ford Motor Company for decades, was initially charged with assault, resisting arrest, and possession of cocaine. |

Exclusive: Republican White House hopefuls attack Obamacare but take money Posted: 31 Mar 2015 10:26 PM PDT By Andy Sullivan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Several Republican governors likely to run for president have secured hundreds millions of dollars under Obamacare while working to dismantle the healthcare law, according to a Reuters review of federal spending records. Governors Scott Walker of Wisconsin, Chris Christie of New Jersey, Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and former Texas Governor Rick Perry, all staunch opponents of President Barack Obama's 2010 Affordable Care Act, have collectively applied for and won at least $352 million through grant programs set up by the law, federal records show. "Receiving federal grants that existed prior to the ACA is not the same as participating in the core elements of the ACA." The money in question stems from less controversial parts of the law that enhance public health and other nuts-and-bolts programs, rather than the insurance exchanges and expansion of the Medicaid program for the poor that have drawn fierce opposition from Republicans. |

Los Angeles to pay $1.35 million to mother of driver who died in police custody Posted: 31 Mar 2015 07:44 PM PDT (Reuters) - The city of Los Angeles will pay $1.35 million to the mother of a man who died of an asthma attack while in police custody, the Los Angeles Times reported. Jorge Azucena, 26, was arrested in 2013 for running a red light, the newspaper said. A subsequent investigation by the police department and the inspector general of the Los Angeles Police Commission found that officers as well as jail personnel ignored his requests for assistance, the newspaper reported. Azucena's mother, Juana Garcia, sued the city, leading to the settlement announced Tuesday. |
U.S. corporations pressure two states accused of curbing gay rights Posted: 31 Mar 2015 07:27 PM PDT Arkansas lawmakers passed a Religious Freedom Restoration Act on Tuesday that critics said would allow businesses to deny service to gays and lesbians, drawing a swift demand from Wal-Mart Stores Inc for the governor to veto the bill. Arkansas followed Indiana, which passed a similar act last week. The world's biggest retailer, Wal-Mart , based in Bentonville, Ark., issued a statement saying the Arkansas bill threatened to undermine "the spirit of inclusion" in the state and "does not reflect the values we proudly uphold." Signed by Doug McMillon, chief executive officer, the statement asked Republican Governor Asa Hutchinson to veto the legislation. |
Nevada rancher Bundy holds rally in support of public lands bill Posted: 31 Mar 2015 07:10 PM PDT (Reuters) - The Nevada rancher who was at the center of an armed standoff with federal agents last year held a peaceful rally on Tuesday in support of a proposal that would give the state greater control of public lands, local media said. Cliven Bundy's ranch in Bunkerville, 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas, was the site of an armed protest against the U.S. Bureau of Land Management last April after the agency sought to seize cattle because Bundy refused to pay grazing fees. Nevada lawmakers are debating a bill that would make the federal government obtain permission to use land in the state, and would let county commissions parcel out state land for commercial use, including land claimed by the U.S. government. Nearby, several opponents of the proposal being discussed in the Legislature waved banners that read: "Keep public lands in public hands," and "Nevada is not for sale." Opponents say the legislation would threaten access to public lands and could end up damaging the state's hunting, fishing and outdoor pursuits industries. |
Lavrov, Zarif claim breakthrough in Iran nuclear talks Posted: 31 Mar 2015 06:54 PM PDT Russia and Iran's foreign ministers claimed in the early hours of Wednesday a breakthrough in talks on a framework deal curtailing Tehran's nuclear programme, but the US said not all issues had been agreed. "One can say with relative certainty that we at the minister level have reached an agreement in principle on all key aspects of the final settlement of this issue," Russian media quoted Sergei Lavrov as saying at talks in Switzerland. This came after Russia's top diplomat and the foreign ministers of five other major powers and Iran missed a midnight (2200 GMT) deadline to agree the main outlines of what they hope will be an historic accord but continued working through the night. The powers hope this final agreement, due to be finalised by June 30, will see Iran scale down its nuclear programme in order to prevent Tehran developing nuclear weapons under the guise of its civilian programme. |

Former pastor, partner used PFGBest failure to hide scam: CFTC lawsuit Posted: 31 Mar 2015 05:02 PM PDT By Tom Polansek CHICAGO (Reuters) - A former pastor at a Florida church and a partner tried to use the 2012 bankruptcy of brokerage Peregrine Financial Group to hide their theft of $2 million from investors in a commodity trading scam, according to a lawsuit filed by U.S. regulators. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission said on Tuesday that it had sued Wesley Allen Brown of Florida, Edward Rubin of North Carolina and their trading firm in U.S. court in Florida for taking money from clients for the purpose of trading commodities and then using the funds for their personal benefit. Neither Brown nor Rubin, who were principals of Maverick International, could immediately be reached for comment. |
