Iran charging U.S. journalist Rezaian with four crimes: Washington Post Posted: 20 Apr 2015 08:41 AM PDT Iran is charging Washington Post journalist Jason Rezaian with four crimes, including espionage, the newspaper said on Monday in a report offering the first details about the exact charges against him. Rezaian, the Post's bureau chief in Tehran, was detained last year in Iran. Among the charges, he is accused of "collaborating with hostile governments" and "propaganda against the establishment," according to a statement from Rezaian's attorney, Leilah Ahsan, the Post reported. The Post said Ahsan is the only individual outside of Iran's judiciary to have read the indictment. |

Inside the big business of little presidential campaign souvenirs Posted: 20 Apr 2015 07:53 AM PDT Heading back to Washington from Las Vegas just days after announcing his presidential candidacy, Sen. Rand Paul (R.-Ky.) huddled with some of his top advisers aboard a Southwest Airlines flight. The candidate had to make a spot decision. It wasn't a burning policy question, delicate staffing change or coveted endorsement that engrossed him that day but the kind of choice unique to modern presidential campaigns. Poring over an iPad that an aide had handed to him, Paul chuckled and gave the green light. |
EU has 'no more excuses' on migrants after Mediterranean tragedy Posted: 20 Apr 2015 02:59 AM PDT EU foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini said Monday the bloc had "no more excuses" not to act after the latest migrant disaster in the Mediterranean and demanded "immediate" action. "With this latest tragedy... we have no more excuses, the EU has no more excuses, the member states have no more excuses," Mogherini said. "We need immediate action from the EU and the member states," she said as she arrived for an emergency meeting of foreign and interior ministers following the weekend loss of a ship with some 700 migrants on board. Mogherini was touching on sensitive ground but she is a former Italian foreign minister and her country has borne the brunt of the latest exodus. |

High security for Boston Marathon as bombing trial pauses Posted: 19 Apr 2015 10:48 PM PDT By Scott Malone BOSTON (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of runners, including some of the world's best, and hundreds of thousands of fans are expected to hit the streets of Boston on Monday for the 119th running of the Boston Marathon. The race goes on during a pause in the trial of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the 21-year-old ethnic Chechen who was convicted earlier this month of the bombing. "We have significant resources and personnel out there to protect our public," said Mayor Martin Walsh. The city will be the same positive environment that people are used to enjoying during the Boston Marathon." The field will include Meb Keflezighi of San Diego, who in 2014 became the first U.S. male to win the race in three decades, with a time of 2 hours, 8 minutes and 37 seconds, as well as top Kenya and Ethiopian contenders including Patrick Makau, Abel Kirui and Wilson Chebet. |
Attorney general nominee vote likely this week: U.S. senator Posted: 19 Apr 2015 08:24 PM PDT A vote on the stalled Senate confirmation of the nominee to be the next U.S. attorney general, Loretta Lynch, could take place in the next two to three days, a senior Republican senator said on Sunday. "My sense is, over the next 48 to 72 hours, that is going to be resolved, and we will move on to this Iran issue," Senator Bob Corker, head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said on CNN's "State of the Union" program. He added that there now were an education bill and trade promotion agreements, in addition to Iran legislation, due for a vote on the Senate floor and that as a result, "this logjam ... will be worked out." Lynch's confirmation has been pending since she was nominated by President Barack Obama last November to replace outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder. |

Florida man who landed at U.S. Capitol thought he'd be intercepted Posted: 19 Apr 2015 02:08 PM PDT A Florida man who piloted a small gyro copter past major Washington, D.C. landmarks last week said on Sunday he had fully expected to be intercepted before he landed on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol, creating a national security scare. Douglas Mark Hughes, 61, a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier, described his flight upon arriving home in Ruskin, Florida, early on Sunday. He recalled it being colder than he had expected flying from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to Washington, where the sight of the Washington Monument helped guide him to the Capitol grounds. He was allowed to return to Florida, but ordered to remain at home in detention until he is due back in Washington for a preliminary hearing on May 8. |
